How secure is our voting system

I'm a huge fan of our paper ballot system (I know that Brian Cowen remarked during the campaign that he wished we had an electronic voting system - Why would he make such a statement?) bec. of the paper trail. Just wondering though are there people employed to oversee the people doing the counting/tallying?
Considering this is so close, it's imperative that adequate protections to ensure an accurate vote count are in place.

You can go down to a count centre and stand in front of the counters in the public area as they count the votes and all parties and campaigns will be doing exactly that tomorrow morning when they are tallying

    its very transparent

And what about tonight? Where are the boxes going tonight? Will they be locked up safely and watched by Gardaí?

Yes! Very important - glad to hear someone asking these questions.

The answer is yes, they are protected by the Gardai until the centres open in the morning.

Ah, I don't think even Libertas would stoop to that.

    They watch each other.
    In shifts.
    Between watching the boxes.
    And each other.

An electronic voting system would pave the way for rigged elections.

There has been enormous criticism of the machines used in the US 2004 elections. According to investigators, there are dozens of easy ways of manipulating the data on the machine to rig it.

And a software engineer testified to a court about how he was approached by a government official to develop a program to manipulate the votes from a voting machine, but he refused and told the authorities.

    Paper only. It's safer.

Who do you suggest protects the boxes?

If you're really that paranoid you can go along to your count centre and stand outside to make sure no one goes in or out, all the while keeping your ear to the ground for mild tremours that might result from tunnelling.
