Turkey's accession is an argument for another time, and muddying the waters re Lisbon with that particular red herring is a bit pathetic.
As an aside anybody who thinks that people from any place on the continent of Europe is "sitting on their suitcases" waiting to come here is, quite frankly, deluded.
Just shows how desperate the NO side are getting - quite happy to lie about things like this.

Turkey can join without the Lisbon treaty.
I, and many others, are wary of the Lisbon treaty because it is run by an undemocratic neo-liberal elite at a time that neo-liberalism has been shown to be a disaster they still push for it.

as for public opinion and leaders reluctance to let them in now, if the EU elite decide it is good for the EU it will happen and the leaders will go along with it.
these leaders have changed their position on this issue before as Sarkozy is much less negative about the prospect than he was initially.
Turkish entry is being pushed by the UK and US as they know it would destabilize the EU and remove a potential threat to their (US) future power.
Turkish entry would be a disaster for the EU.

Again, the debate here is Lisbon. Turkey's membership of the EU is a separate issue.

Not exactly a proxy for Turkish membership, but definitely favourable towards that end.

Still, as I've said, there's plenty of valid reasons to reject them.
that isn't for the Turks it is for the former Yugoslavs.
