French minister says the Irish will vote again

Because the Irish press today concentrated on the threats aspects of the interview of foreign affairs minister Bernard Kouchner, another part, and perhaps more important part of his declarations, was missed by the Irish voters.

I certify that he said that: "and then try to convince the Irish, who already voted again for the Nice treaty for that matter, to put the treaty back on the work table".

I remind you that this minister will play a leading role in the next few months, since France will have the EU presidency.

Full interview, audio, video and transcript here.

Re: French minister says the Irish will vote again

Advice for the French govt: butt out. Unless you want us to remind you that your own people voted no. He can't even persuade his own people of the merits of this treaty in a referendum, yet he wants to lecture us. We fought for 700 years for our independence and we don't need some tin-pot Napoleon telling us what to do.

If we do vote again I will still vote no without radical amendments. Brussels doesn't like that? Well then they can go hang as far as I am concerned. They are not the EU of the past. They are becoming a threat to national sovereignty with their endless obsession with centralising everything.

The utter arrogance of the French for all to see. And anyone thinks our veto matters a damn?

Hold the outrage. It's an interview in French, for a French station, on a French website. Are you saying the rest of the EU has no right to speculate about the results of our decision, or are you saying Arnaud should not have pointed out the comments?

He was right to point out the imperial designs the Franco-German axis has on Ireland. We won't be told what to do by a French govt minister.

He's not telling anyone what to do. He's answering an interviewer's question on what the implications of an Irish No vote would be for the EU - of which France is a member, remember?

France becomes relevant only when it suits the Yes side. When it doesn't suit then the French No vote in 2005 is of no account.
