'Government betrayed us over Nice': Jack O'Connor

He was very direct just now on Newstalk. He said the government betrayed the Unions within weeks of the Nice referendum passing by opening up the borders to the NAS workers without bringing in the necessary protections. He also said that Ireland was blocking EU level worker protection such as the Agency Workers Directive. He said that SIPTU cannot support Lisbon in these circumstances and that there has been no movement behind the scenes from government on the Collective Bargaining issue.

Don't rule out a last-minute ploy by FF to fool SIPTU like they did the farmers. To Jack O'Connor I say - fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The govt did lie to all of us over Nice and mass migration and job displacement. In a few years if we vote for Lisbon tax harmonisation will be imposed and Cowen or someone can say "oh you voted for this remember Lisbon". Don't be fooled again.

just heard something on newstalk news conscerning a vote in europe in relation to agency workers and how weve now reversed our postion to allow them more rights.Decision is on monday.

is this the carrot to buy SIPTU?

in regards to the NICE thing one of the big unspokens is its bloody obvious the government lied in relation to its impact. dick roache and de rossa in particular. i wouldnt be surprised if a good number of no voters are thinking payback for the last treaty. probably the first time thats ever happened as usually a protest vote is directed toward the government, not the project.

Re: 'Government betrayed us over Nice': Jack O'Connor

Since May 2004, the state has issued 453 thousand PPS numbers to Eastern Europeans.

It was in yesterday's Irish Times that 90% of new jobs in last year were filled by Non- Irish nationals.

For whose benefit is this country run?

Fat politicians with snout in EU trough or Irish people?

Quotes on East European immigration - They lied to get a yes vote

" There is no reason to believe...... that large numbers of workers will
    wish to come"
    [ Dick Roche I.T. Letters 12/7/2002 ]

"Mr. XXXX also repeats the line propagated by the No to Nice campaign that
only four countries are to permit immigration after enlargement. This
statement grossly misrepresents the position of the other member states."
    [ Dick Roche I.T. Letters Aug/Sept. 2002. ]

" Ireland will be in precisely the same position as all other member states
on the question of free movement following any enlargement of the
    Community."
    [ Dick Roche - as reported in I.T. xx/09/2002

" It is the view of the Irish government and a number of other governments
that this idea that there is going to be a huge influx of immigrants is just
not supported. The evidence is just not there for it. They are not going to
flood to the west. The same rules are going to apply in all 15 states. There
is no evidence to suggest that the people of the Czech Republic or Poland
are less anxious to stay in their home as (sic) we are.
[ Dick Roche transcript of interview with The Irish Catholic, Govt.
    Buildings 19/9/2002. ]

" It is a deliberate misrepresentation to suggest that tens of thousands
will suddenly descend en masse on Ireland." [ P. De Rossa I.T. Letters
    20/8/2002 ]

" The expected trickle of immigration to Ireland will on balance benefit the
    Irish economy."
    [ P. De Rossa I.T. Letters 20/8/2002

" I estimate that fewer than 2,000 [ two thousand] will choose our distant
    shores each year."
    [ P. De Rossa I.T. Letters 20/8/2002 ]

" There is no evidence there would be a problem with free movement of
workers on accession." [ Bertie Ahern Dail Eireann 10/9/2002 ]

"Efforts have been made to foment fears that migrants from the new member
states could flock to Ireland. This is not only unpleasant but plainly
    wrong."
[ Brian Cowan Sunday Business Post 7/7/2002 ]

" Ireland is already benefiting from the skills and energy of workers from
the applicant states, about 7,000 [ seven thousand] of whom received work
permits last year. There is no basis whatever for expecting a huge upsurge
    in these numbers."
[ Brian Cowan Sunday Business Post 7/7/2002 ]

" The second myth is that the Nice Treaty will mean mass immigration from
the new EU member countries in Eastern Europe. This is probably the most
odious of the myths propagated by some in the "No" campaign."
    [ Willie O'Dea Sunday Independent Summer 2002]

We all know the answer to that question brio. Corrupt, greedy politicians have sold out this country and destroyed it's very soul. The arrogance of the non - nationals in Ireland is appalling. The inundation of this country by economic migrants from Eastern Europe was a gross act of treason that should never have been allowed to occur.

More than seven hundred trade union activists from around Europe have signed an appeal for a 'No' vote on Thursday. It can be read here:

People were certainly mislead about the number of East Europeans likely to arrive here. We were also mislead about the number of EU states likely to have an open door. But we were not mislead about the fact that Ireland would have an open door. This was well known at the time. The No to Nice people campaigned on this issue but not enough voters were listening, and the Trade Unions were not listening at all.

Then he was a dope to trust them because it was in the realm of the bleeding obvious even before the Nice II Referendum that floods of immigrants would arrive here once it was passed and the NAS were admitted as a result and that they would be used to undercut Irish workers.

Seriously you would wonder how they get the jobs in the first place!
