Lisbon Treaty and Immigration Bill 2008

The proposed Immigration Bill 2008 is scheduled for debate and vote after the Lisbon Treaty.

If there is a yes vote my understanding is that Immigration will become a 'Competence' off the EU.

This will mean that Fianna Fail will be able to kick the bill further down the field unti the EU clarifys the extent of its new powers regarding Immigration.

If the EU becomes the dominant power in relation to immigration legislation and enforcement then this lets Fianna Fail off the hook and any problems with immigration can be blamed on the EU.

Should we vote YES in the Lisbonn Treaty to transfer power over immigration to the EU and let Fianna Fail off the hook?

It's a real worry allright. At least FF now seem to realise that there is such a thing as Illegal Immigration!

If you read of the Charter of Fundamental Rights as lot of it is wide open to interpratation as to whether these rights extend only to EU Citizens or to anybody from anywhere who ends up in the EU.

Methinks immigrants will be allowed to flood in from Africa, Asia and south America to increase the pool of cheap labour and this so called 'Rights' charter will be used to stop expulsions and drag things out for years in the courts.

Yeah, only Ireland suffers from illegal immigration. Ireland is the first port of call for illegal immigrants. None of the other countries in the EU want to prevent illegal immigration.

I'm still trying to figure out why the hell they come here at all. If I were an illegal immigrant I'd be off working in some rich dude's boat down in the Algarve... again!

A no vote is the only way to give the govt the message that it is too soft on illegal immigration and immigration generally.

The ONLY way? Oh, I'd imagine some sort of citizens' militia would send a pretty strong message too.

No, it really isn't. You can't give your reasons on the ballot. That spoils it.

Actually, forget what I just said, FT... you can write on your ballot :P

That aside, telling your local TD that immigration is an electoral issue for you would be a better way to ensure your grievances get attention.

The politicians won't listen unless they get an electoral form of a bloody-nose and that will happen on June 12th.

Re: Lisbon Treaty and Immigration Bill 2008

Many on the NO side are voting due to issues relating to:

    -Tax
    -Neutrality
    -Agriculture
    -Nebulous arguments on sovereignty
-Libertas and YD-injected fears about abortion and divorce

So I really do not know how the Goverment extrapolates the individual and most popular reasons from a single yea or nay ballot.
