Their are Four major reasons why the No side are gaining momentum.
1. Neutrality
2. Cultural Identity
3. Sovereignty
4. Power within the Union
On Neutrality Ireland cannot be drafted into a European army without a referendum by the people of Ireland.
Under the Charter of fundamental right the EU is obligated to preserve and develop the common values shared by the member states while at the same time
“respecting the diversity of the cultures and the traditions of the people of Europe as well as the national identities of the Member States and the organization of their public authorities at national, regional and local level“.
On the issue of Sovereignty at this point in time Brussels presents the government with Directives that must be implemented or else the Irish government will be fined. Under the treaty the Irish government will partake in the drafting of European legislation that will effect us rather then letting the European parliament force laws onto us as is currently the case.
And finally on the issue of power. While it is true that Ireland is a small nation and a country like Germany is a big one. It is also true that a country like Germany has more political parties and many of these parties have radically different policies and ideologies. The Christian Democrats and German communists may both want German interest to come first. Unlike FF and FG who are both centrist parties and will promote Irish interests while both having similar ideologies German or any other big country in Europe will have dozens of different parties and will have very little in common except their nationality.
Another thing to point out is that FG is currently in the same party as the CDU and FF are in the Union for Europe of the Nations parties.
Therefore the fellow parliamentarians that are in the same parties as are MEP’s will want to keep the party united within the parliament. With Irish MEP’s scattered over several parties in Europe all promoting Irish interests it is fair to say that Ireland is going into Europe with common policies and values that will ensure that Europe will not walk all over us and larger countries will not dominate the continent to our detriment.
<MOD> You're welcome to express your opinion on how you'll vote on the Lisbon Treaty, why you've decided and also to appeal to others, but please use existing threads to do so. Clutting up the forum with personal threads such as this will only serve to bury other threads. Here might be a start.</MOD>
