Should the government accept the result of the referendum?

Whether it's yes or no, should the Government accept the result.

I will accept the result whatever way it goes. (I am on the no side).

They can't not accept the result, this is a pointless thread.

Personally, I don't think this is a competence for the electorate so I would happily go out and reward Fianna Fail with my first preferences at the local and European elections if Cowen ratified it by Act of the Oireachtas alone.

The government should give a comittment before the referendum that they will accept the outcome and that there will be no re-runs, whatever happens. Howzat?

Of course they should. What's the point, otherwise.

The question is, will they try to bypass the result and ratify it through the Oireachtas. It's more than possible that the Supreme Court wouldn't uphold an objection. But if they did, that would surely mean FF getting kicked out at the next General Election.

How important is this to Cowen and FF?

Well there's a good chance too, I would hope, that they might see the Crotty Judgement as going too far and might at least give a clearer ruling.

Exactly! A Yes vote will cause our constitution to change so they have to accept the decision of the voters either way. If they get a No vote and go ahead anyway they have themselves acted unconstitutionally.

I don't follow that at all. If there is a No vote, there is no change to the constitution. As it stands now, it is quite possible (maybe even probable), that according to Crotty the Treaty could be legally ratified without the need for the referendum. That won't change if we vote No.
