SF break health & safety rules for launch

Sinn Fein deliberately chose to break health and safety rules for the launch of their campaign against the Lisbon Treaty. To facilitate photo-opportunities the party hung posters only three feet from the ground on poles the length of Molesworth Street. Despite complaints from members of the public (non-political members of the public, not party hacks), and complaints from groups for the visually impaired, SF has so far declined to remove the posters though they are not merely physically dangerous at their locations, but also completely illegal.

All parties face problems where someone putting up posters might hang them too low. But deliberately putting 4-5 posters so low that in one case someone could leave a bike up against it, is reckless and dangerous. If there is anyone here from Sinn Fein, could they please get those posters taken down immediately. (I have a personal interest here. A friend of mine, whom I shared a flat with in the past, is severely visually impaired and was injured in the past when someone hung posters low enough for her to collide with it. She had to get stitches to her face after getting a deep gash caused from the corner of a poster.)

I got on to the IMC about this breach and trust that Lord Alderdice and his chums will be investigating it. This time they won't get away as I understand that the Army Council fully endorsed this low lying poster attack.

    Some things never change.

Why does she walk into lamp posts?

The more important question, was this lamp post a member of the IRA?

So it's all about you is it? Can someone get the Council for the Blind on this?
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

She must have been going at some speed, and, in my vast experience (I have a brother and a son who are blind) long cane or guide dog users tend to take their time through city streets. Long cane users tend to stay near a wall, and lamposts tend to be at the verge of the road. Even if the odd lampost is on the side of a wall, a long cane (obstacle finder) or a guide dog (obstacle avoider) would have sussed these obstacles out before your friend reached them.

Which aid does she use?? As I say, she must have been going at a fair speed to have gashed her head off a poster. Not unless someone was guiding her and didn't inform her of an impending obstacle.

BTW, I'm not an SF supporter, but I do think that you are being petty and have merely started this thread to get the boot in on Sinn Féin. I've noticed many political parties, IBEC, councils, circuses etc.. who have placed posters at head level, so the shinners are not alone on this, if of course, you are telling the truth.

How would using a long cane alert the user to something hanging four feet in the air?

Also, you don't have to be walking fast to have your face cut by something like the edge of a poster. We all know what it's like to be struck by the edge of an umbrella - not nice, especially if you're visually impaired and don't know what the hell has just happened to you.

    SF should fix this fast.

Yes, they should.. but NDS knows better, that a quick ph call to SF HQ, outlining the problem, would be a much more effective way of dealing with it, than coming online here and complaining about it..
