Referendum Commission using out of date electoral register

Not content with simply leaving out the wording of the Constitutional Amendment on which we will be voting on June 12 in their booklet, the Referendum Commission is sending booklets on the Lisbon Treaty out to everyone on last year's electoral register, rather than the current register. A booklet arrived in my house 2 days ago addressed to a person who lived here last year, but moved out well before the general election, and who is not registered to vote at this address. Neither of the people in this house who are registered to vote received a booklet addressed to them. So why are they using an out of date register?

Actually, I received a letter from my local council asking me to send it back to them listing all previous addresses. Now, I'm already on the register at this address. Is that ok?

They use the register supplied to them by local authorities. Some local authorities use the last full register, not including changes made mid-year. They don't choose which register to use, however much conspiracy theorists may like to think otherwise.

Or, as NDS points out, basic complexity and dependence on other bits of the system.

EU criticised for DNA database plan
    Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:02

The European Union has rushed through rules giving police access to DNA databases across the bloc without regard for proper safeguards, a data protection watchdog said today.

Tourists could find themselves suspects in a cross-border criminal investigation merely for having had a drink at a motorway service station, European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx said.

'In some cases it will be a nightmare not only for citizens but also law enforcement authorities... What might have been done responsibly has not been done well,' Mr Hustinx told a news conference presenting his annual report.
