EC denies claims in leaked memo

I know this story would be better suited to the Lisbon Treaty sub-forum, but since I believe this deserves a better airing than it would get in the sub-forum, I decided to post it here. Have a read, and discuss. I for one have no difficulty believing these claims and I think it is a further black mark on the current Gombeen Regime's record.

Mods, I'll understand if it is moved.

EC denies claims in leaked memo

The European Commission has denied reports that it is putting off announcing anything that could cause controversy ahead of Ireland's referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

A leaked British diplomatic email claims commission officials told Irish politicians that it was willing to tone down or delay messages that could be unhelpful during the referendum campaign.

The memo details a conversation between the Director General of the Department of Foreign Affairs' EU Division, Dan Mulhall, and a senior official at the British embassy in Dublin, Elizabeth Green.

Mr Mulhall is reported to have said procedurally it would have been better to have the referendum in October, but French plans to develop EU defence policy during the French presidency later this year would have complicated the referendum campaign.

When they say "unhelpful", what they probably mean is "can be used by the anti-Lisbon people to confuse people or distort the argument".

I imagine the Commission are only holding back on publsihing detailed proposals, their work programmes for the year ahead are published at the beginning of eahc year and are not hidden. If i was involved in the no campaign I would look at the French presidency priorities which are also public and the European Commission priorities and see what you could stir up as to problem areas for Ireland, CCCTB, Defence, etc

of coure the WOULD say that wouldnt they its like a used car salesman who's caught by the bollocks backtracking over his claims!

end of the day this was an OFFICIAL document and if they ever find out who leaked it theryre getting arrested for it. that tends to lend it more credibitlity than an EU press release.

besides is anyone really surprised by this action by the EU? Its not a million miles away from bert legging it to the aras when he caught wind of the ************************e that was going to hit the fan prior to the last election.
