Business interests support for Lisbon cooling: SBP

According to tomorrow's SBP there are some indications that the support for the Lisbon Treaty among the business community may be fraying. It states that Jim Power was sounded out by a 'prominent' person in the Irish Bankers Federation about the merits of opposing the Treaty and it also refers to differences of opinion in a large Chamber of Commerce about supporting the Treaty. The EU and French corporation tax proposals is the key issue for business interests.

This is most welcome. I would like to think those of us on this forum have helped alert people to the real dangers of the Treaty.

Hmm. We already knew that there are some business interests whose turn Lisbon does not serve. That there's more than one is hardly a surprise.

well considering the governments assurances about us not experiencing massive immegration after NICE proved to be a load of cobblers (what was it de rossa said, less than 2000 a year )maybe the business community isnt that confident that tax consolidation/harmination isnt going to happen through some form or another.

cant blame em really with governments record but still im surprised. particularly seeing how mobile business is now.

Interesting report in todays SBP by Kathleen Barrington about divisions in one of the major Chambers of Commerce over whether to support the Treaty. Apparently last month at a briefing by Friends First economist Jim Power on FDI, a representative of the Irish Banking Federation put a question about whether it would be worthwhile opposing Lisbon to send out a signal of opposition to the EU's tax-harmonisation proposals.

Might also have something to do with the ECB's reluctance to cut interest rates.

Also, Fergalr, please don't associate the SBP with capitalists. I read it myself and am not a capitalist.
