Poll shows that youth vote will be key to Lisbon success - YFG
RedC research also points to rejection of
SF/Green/Libertas scaremongering among young voters
Young Fine Gael (YFG) have said today that an opinion poll published last weekend has illustrated the key role which young and first-time voters will have in securing a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum.
Speaking today, YFG President Barry Walsh has said: "The opinion poll published by the Sunday Business Post last weekend showed some encouraging signs for the Yes campaign, but most strikingly it illustrated the importance that the youth vote will have in securing a Yes vote for the Treaty.
It showed that the strongest support for Lisbon lies in the 18-24 yr old age group, 60% of whom say they will vote Yes. This shows that young voters are far more likely to support the Treaty than the electorate as a whole.
"This gives us many reasons to be confident about the Lisbon Treaty, and the future of Ireland within the European Union. In 2002, young voters demonstrated their enthusiasm for the European project by coming out in their droves to support the Nice Treaty. It is vital that all youth organisations on the "Yes" side to do their utmost to secure a high turnout among these voters on this occasion, and Young Fine Gael will lead this charge in the coming months.
"The poll also shows that young voters are rejecting the lies and scaremongering of the No campaign. Sinn Féin and elements of the Green Party, who lay false claims to being parties of young people, have failed in their attempts to frighten young voters into voting No. The poll also shows that the efforts of Libertas and, other shadowy organisations backed by foreign cash, have been a dismal failure.
"YFG are eagerly awaiting the setting of a date for the Referendum. The rag-bag of miniscule groups favouring a No vote are having no impact on young voters, and we are keen to get the verdict of the people on the Lisbon Treaty at the earliest possible date.
