De Rossa votes not to respect Irish referendum

By a huge majority (499 to 129) European MEPs, including Labour's Proinsias De Rossa voted against the motion ‘The European Parliament undertakes to respect the outcome of the referendum in Ireland’ this afternoon in Strasbourg.

I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye.
How did the FF'ers vote (and other Irish MEPs)?
    Who tabled the motion?
    What was the context?

Or is this just a press release?

Do you have anything else except the blurb from the Sinn Fein website? - not that I dont believe them or anything but I would like to see the full picture.

all I could find on the EU parliament website was this - maybe they will update it.

What is it about Sinn Fein and their obsession with all things military?

Democracy is the road to socialism but socialists do not necessarily respect democracy.
Marxists, Feminists and Leftists operate on the basis of "liberating tolerance" - i.e. their ideas should be tolerated, and any opposition should be suppressed.

would it have been more or less valid a decision made by De Rossa if the motion had been tabled by FG ?

And would you be as inclined to write as stupid a post ?

Yeah I'd definitely like to see the bigger picture. Sinn Fein seem to be taking the interpretation of this motion as being that the EU will force Lisbon on us even if we vote No, contrary to the Crotty judgement. I don't see this happening.

Oh relax there - I was making the observation that Sinn Fein seem to make the possible military implications of the Reform treaty - actually looking back - any EU Treaty for that matter -the be all and end of all of their debate in regard to their opposition - leaving other matters in the shade to a degree. I just think many people find Sinn Fein , in view of their overall and individuals recent history, less than credible when preaching about the dangers of military entanglement.

    The report, wording and reference number were;

    Report A6-0013/2008

Richard Corbett, Íńigo Méndez de Vigo

    Treaty of Lisbon

    2007/2286(INI)

    Motion for a resolution

Point -2 a – (before point 2, under the title "More democratic accountability")

    Motion for a resolution Amendment
-2a. Undertakes to respect the outcome of the referendum in Ireland.

The amendment was a stand alone one, there was no proposal to delete any other text merely an opportunity for the MEPs to state their support the decision that the citizens of Ireland would take. The vast majority decided that they would not respect the democratic decision.

    Truly incredible.

You would have to be nuts to agree to support the Lisbon treaty after this two fingers to Ireland.
