Controversial EU policies put on hold ahead of Lisbon vote

According to a report in EUobserver, Commission officials have admitted there has been a clamp-down on controversial policy activity during Slovenia's presidency of the EU as EU members begin the process of ratifying the Lisbon Treaty.

Potentially contentious talks - such as on an EU diplomatic service - have been put on hold until the treaty is approved by all member states. Last month the Health Services Directive was shelved by the Commission because it was believed it could hinder ratification.

That's interesting, and I wouldn't have a tough time believing it.

In the case of the diplomatic service, however, surely it's the case that the Treaty needs to be ratified before such a service can be created. (I'm open to correction on that.)

EU Observer is a rather well respected EU news website, as I'm sure you're aware qtman, although it does tend to be a slightly more critical of the EU than the European Voice.

The editor in chief is wife of Jens Peter Bonde MEP from Denmark.

Commissioner Kovacz has said he will use Enhanced-Cooperation to get around national vetos on his tax-harmonisation plan (CCCTB) but is holding off until Lisbon is ratified as well due to pressure from the Commission and Council.

This is one more to add to the list which already includes the decision by the Slovenes to avoid discussion of enhancing EU military capabilities before our vote has been cast. Reported by Jamie Smyth in the Irish Times last week:

EU sources said yesterday that the presidency would also avoid any discussion of enhancing the EU's military capabilities in the run-up to the Irish referendum.

Tax harmonisation is not the same as CCTB, the Commission have said they have abandoned any plans for tax harmomnisation. Kovacs has also said in the same publication that this will not impact on Irleand...I hope Libertas isn't taking campaign tips from FT...on second thoughts
