Plans for Euro tax changes shelved until after vote: SBP

According to the SBP the publication of plans by commissioner Kovacs to harmonise corporation tax have been shelved until after the treaty vote. The decision was taken after pressure from the government that this issue would impact negatively on the referendums hopes of passing. The publication of the proposals has been put back until after the summer.

does this imply that post referena (assuming it passes) and the treaty becomes law that changes in the taxation independence of nations (specifically ours) is at risk ? of that in some way it would be easier for them to achieve this harmonization post treaty ?

Of course it is at rick bob..

lets not be fooling ourselves here.. and this isn't about crackpots opposing every Treaty that comes along..

the purpose of this Treaty is to move further along the road of Federalisation of the EU. Such a federal entity would require a "federal tax" or "taxation" policy to function.. Tax harmonisation is on the way.

i don't think its opposed by crackpots (though no doubt many of the usual crackpots will be about though...), to be honest i havn't even made up my own mind on it yet, due to lack of information, in general i'm pro european as i believe the EU has been good for ireland (very good in many ways) but that in no way means automatic support of same.

i'm interested to know more about this taxation matter though, esp given that the UK will be signing up to the treaty (without a referendum) and taxation has always been one of the red lines for the UK

See I told you the Treaty would allow tax-harmonisation. The cat is out of the bag now.

Commissioner Kovacz is on record as wanting to introduce a Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base. He states that if he can't get it through via unanimity, he will try to get it through via Enhanced Cooperation instead. Of course he would, as the bar for that is substantially lower than for unanimity - requiring QMV instead. Which is where the Treaty comes in, raising the QMV blocking minority from 27%+ to 35%+ thus making it harder to block this dangerous policy. This is the "smoking gun" which deserves to sink this treaty. They seriously expect us to vote this through so that they can then go ahead afterwards with the plan for a system of taxation based on paying taxes to the destination of company sales. This would force companies in Ireland to pay most of their corporate taxes to Germany and France and the UK instead of to the Irish govt, as 90% of what we produce is exported. The Newstalk106 show "Down to Business" was discussing this some weeks ago and it's very alarming what is being planned. What is almost as alarming though is that our govt is trying to get us to vote for something which will make these plans a reality.

We should seek allies (Luxemburg, the Brits and the Eastern Europeans) and block this tax nonsense...let no matter pass or be dealt with until the idea is killed off....block everything.....

This is excellent news. We should hold out on calling the referendum for as long as possible and block as many things which lead to tax harmonisation as possible to ensure that the destructive and dangerous idea of a CCCTB is destroyed. We will lose so much if we let this happen.

It seems likely that the EU may want to stop a race to the bottom in Corp Tax and its not clear that Ireland would benefit if there was a race to the bottom.
