New EU President to be announced by Thursday [RTE]

By the 19th, according to the RTE website.

Well we already know that John Bruton has about as much of a chance as Dana of getting the appointment. In any event it's all being decided at some gala dinner type event, and the chosen one will be announced shortly afterwards.

Does anyone want to guess who get's the reward?

The first holder of the office sets the tone and parameters of the office .eg Douglas Hyde. If it is Blair, he would be de facto President of Europe. If it is a belgian who nobody has heard of - he will merely be convenor and chairman ie President of the European Council. Given that the heads of government decide and they never want to be overshadowed, my guess is that on the 19th most europeans will be asking 'who?'

I agree with you Congalltee, there is no political will for a very strong President of the European Council, and even if there was, there are very little chances that it would have happen, as the power balance is already established, and the President of the European Council has almost no power, than to sit and try to convince the other Heads of State and Government to reach a consensus.

It is clearly written in the treaties that the President of the Council has very limited responsibilities.

It is a lost of fuss for nothing.

Mouroux, it's time to let go, Blair has no chances, he's out, there is no need to promote the anger of irishmen against the President of the European Council by using Blair as a poster.

Please, please, please surprise everybody and appoint Bruton, Robinson or even Pat Cox!

Even Tony Blair however would be better than some BeNeLuxian nobody.

The Belgian Prime Minister Van Rompuy would be better know across Europe then Robinson, Cox and sadly even Bruton as it's been so many years since he was Taoiseach.

It was never going to be Blair as he has too much baggage and Rompuy is a compromise choice. I hoped Bruton could be that compromise choice, but sadly it doesn't seem like that is going to be the case.

adamtaylor we cannot just 'let go' -or forget about the many many deformed children being born every day in Iraq. We cannot just 'let go' -and ignore the bombings. In the case that we 'let go' and let Blair in, you would still be letting go, i.e. glossing over the big, brutal reality that is emanating from the corrupt, arrogant, inhuman, West. What we actually need to let go of is the Christian/Humanist myth of progress.

Please open another thread and complain there about Blair, and I'll agree with you, as I belive you are right.

However, using him to promote hatred and instigate irishmen to cast a dark light on EU, is something else isn't it? especially when , now, he has no more chances of being elected the President of the Euroean Council. From this point of view, I meant move on, and just let go the relationship Blair, EU.

Robinson isn't qualified for the job - its basically a requirement that you're a sitting or former prime minister, as that gives you experience of chairing meetings and brokering compromises among conflicting interests.

Even Tony Blair however would be better than some BeNeLuxian nobody.
No he wouldn't. Blair would be permanently pushing himself into the foreground, whereas a good holder of this job would be like a good football referee - effective, but rarely the centre of attention.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.
