Tories fighting over Europe - Front page headline of the Standard this evening

Front page headline of the London Evening Standard this evening is

"Cameron Rocked by Grandees Backlash over Europe"

It goes on to explain that Ken Clarke will campaign for a Yes vote, with Boris Johnson leading the charge on the No side.

There are hints that the Johnson side is actually campaigning for a complete withdrawal from the EU and thats what the vote should be on.

    interesting times.

Ken Clarke represents a wing of the Tories which has all but vanished. Their long dark night of the soul saw sensible pro-European people driven out of the party, often towards the Lib Dems. The real left wing of the Tory party is people like David Cameron nowadays, and even they are very Eurosceptic, whereas the right wing of the party just wants to quit the EU. Cameron needs to be sensible and he was. Boris Johnson on the other hand wants to be Prime Minister and is positioning himself as the champion of the right wing - see how the internet Tories, who are uniformly anti-EU and anti-public spending, praise anyone who will bring back Thatcherism.

This a wonderful bonus to Friday's vote. They should have run posters: Vote Yes to split the Tory party.

Boris does fancy himself as PM (whether that is fanciful or not is another, and far more complex, matter) and he will take any chance he can to whip up trouble for Cameron whilst firmly rooting himself in the Tories - not being a rogue as such. He caused plenty of trouble for Cameron when he went for London Mayor in the first place and then he ran.

The thing about Boris is that he is far more intelligent than most people give him credit for. He is an utter pragmatist, in the sorriest sense of the word. One could imagine him campaigning for withdrawl from the EU and then get into office and embrace it - he'll just do what he can to position towards power.

Boris for PM in a few years once Cameron messes up the next election, don't underestimate the Tories when it comes to hitting the self destruct button.

Difficult to see how the Tories will seriously mess up the next election, or even the one after that, though may God forgive me for ridiculous predictions. Labour are good at giving Tory PMs a clear run for a decade or more.

Even though i am a No voter, you are 100 per cent accurate.

i wrote in a previous thread on how i agreed with Pat Cox and his analysis. to be fair - he was bang on, in the bigger geopolitical sense.

its not too ridiculous - there's a state Broadcaster called the BBC that will do Labour's bidding.

Nick Robinson, the BBC political editor, is a former chair of the Young Conservatives. Andrew Neil, presenter of This Week and The Daily Politics, is a former Conservative Party researcher. Andrew Marr, another senior current affairs presenter, has moved from radical socialism to condemning his employer's "cultural liberal bias", and recently asked the Prime Minister whether he had a drug dependency on his morning current affairs show, an accusation based on a rumour spread by right-wing attack blogs.

If there's any bias in the BBC, it ain't towards Labour.

Although no fan of the Tories they are a party that sticks out from the consensus driven mind numbing nod-fest that is European politics. If you look at the main European nations and their centre right and left parties there is little or no debate of the big issues like Europe, multiculturalism, nationalism relationship with the US. Any one who questions the prevailing orthodoxy in Europe is slapped with the far right label which obviates the need for more debate. The Tories do have people who question these in their own irascible fashion.
