    When is the replay?

Socialist Party MEP Joe Higgins said that if the treaty is passed it will make it 1-1 and he joked that 'there should be a replay'.

I must say I agree with the Joeletariat. If we voted yes the first time, no way in hell would there be a second referendum. I mean, if Party A gets into government in the next election, does it mean we can call another election because Party B claims that the people didn't understand the issues, and Party B can promise guarantees that Party B considered important in the first campaign?

    Hi,

in elections clearly so - especially now that who Ireland's Government are could matter less, since they are now to be directly ruled by their masters in Brussels.

Refferenda are a matter of the decision of Brussels and if they order the Oireactas then it is clear that they will do as they are told.

However since the public didn't realise in just howmuch contempt Brussels and Ireland's politicians held the opinion of the people and how little value is Ireland's democracy on this occasion - perhaps it should in this one instance be the best of 3, since the Irish people voted honestly the first time but were betrayed.

    Regards,
    Greg L-W.

Definitely let's make it the best of three. The only problem might be that to be really fair we'd have to hold it in good economic times so the yessers couldn't use the same scare tactics and now that they've effectively sold us down the swannie, that day might never come....

When can we expect Lisbon 3?

I seem to remember on the very evening of the vote last year, the government(either roche or martin) refused to rule out another referendum. Instead they carried out their famous market research in the weeks after, came up with a list of possible reasons why people voted no and presented it as an excuse to re-run the referendum.

Given how much of the yes sides campaign was based on ideas not in the treaty such as "Yes to jobs", "Yes to Prosperity" and the corporate hijacking of Intel and Ryanair, is the scene set for more the government to once again carry out research into why people voted? And should they determine that these reasons do not relate to whats in the actual treaty, allow people to vote again?

Or is it a case of the government has the desired result, no more referendums? Is it impossible to reject a european treaty?

Unfortunately I think it unlikely. Apparently this time the vote was "sophisticated and mature" as opposed to last time when the irish people clearly didn't understand what they were doing when they voted NO...nasty, deceptive NO campaigners....

Much better to just accept the soothing tones of Barroso a few minutes ago who couldn't conceal hs glee as he explained how he thought Ireland voted yes "in appreciation of how Europe has handled our crisis.

Tell it like it is, Manuel.

of course . In the near future our native *********************************** politicians will be telling us to blame Brussels for our woes , nothing they can do about it..tee hee tee hee . Completely ruling out a democratic option to change things . Thats when people start cracking up . And thats why all empires eventually fall apart . The contradictions at the heart of the european empire though are too deep rooted . A nation state will always struggle to assert itself in europe and this is rarely ever done by purely peaceful means .

    there will be blood

You are asked to buy a CD. You then say no. You are then asked again and you say yes. You have the CD. You won't be asked again do you want the CD because you have it.
It's possible that you'll be asked do you want us to take the CD back but you'll never be asked again do you want the CD.

    Similarly
We where asked did we want the Lisbon treaty. We said no. We where asked again and we've said yes. Once it's ratified we will have it, so we can't be asked again do you want it. We can only be asked do we want to keep the Treaty in force over us. In order to leave it now would require us to leave the EU and (with negotiations) take up the same position as Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.
In order for that question to be asked people will have to give a majority to anti-Lisbon parties in the next GE.

    So the short answer is:
When anti-Lisbon parties get a majority in the Dáil there can be a replay of sorts but not a rerun. (well unless they somehow got a majority before Lisbon is ratified)
"She'll hold together. Hear me, baby? Hold together!"
