Maternal grump here, whilst driving in Sandymount today l saw some polling station signs up in the local national school. l like my ability to vote, being feminist and appreciative of how women's enfranchisement was won ; but l gots to organise childcare and will miss the bleeding tally (again). S'pos most politicos here aren't juggling the whole caboodle ?

we get notes from school board to absent our kids for the purposes of polling. They are done in very formal language - far as l remember there is also a general note published in papers. if you have a school-going child and their school is a polling station. You need notice that they will be closed in order to organise childcare. some parents don't know if their school premises is a polling station.

I know nothing about how the tally works, but I did hear a rumour that the tallies from last years referendum were highly underestimated as far as the NO side was concerned. I heard that the tallies were coming in at 60% + for NO when the count was stopped. Is there any shred of truth in this at all??

You can be quite sure it would have been publicised if there was a word of truth in it. The counting staff are not all traitors to democracy.

Maybe you heard something about tallies and didn't understand it. Tallies are what the activists compile looking at the ballot-papers which are being counted by the staff. Tallying can stop at any time if the tally people decide to take a break. It doesn't affect the count.

    Total bollocks.

    Can you canvass on Thursday?

Sorry to hijack your thread Dot but didn't want to start a new thread over quite a "minor" issue. Can you canvass on Thursday, the day before the referendum? Of course you can't canvass on Friday, I'm correct on that aren't I? (What happens if you do - hypothetically?) And what about posters within x metres from polling stations? Thanks

media moratorium for 24 hours, am unsure re polling stations though. As to tallies, if u have canvassed you may be be able to request tally passes. Go to the count centres and watch how it works- though elections are more varied and interesting than referenda. Also internet and Twitter have quick communications via blogs and phone so ye can keep up.
