    IT email debate: Workers rights

Shay Cody of Impact versus Jimmy Kelly of Unite.
Shay sings the praises of the Charter and the FG/Lab promise to legislate for collective bargaining. Rattles sabre about detatchment from EU if we vote no.
Jimmy points out the qualifications on workers rights in he charter and the fact that politicians have been promising collective bargaining legislation for decades. Jimmy points out that unless unions force the governments hand the way the IFA forced the governments hand last year collective bargaining will remain a promise. Jimmy also points out that the charter is already used by the ECJ.

What is the overall position of UNITE on Lisbon?

Was the position on the Irish refrendum decided in London or in Dublin?- this is one of the complexities of dealing with an Anglo Irish Union

Unite are not controlled by the labour party. The irish unions that are joined at the hip to the labour party support a yes (without balloting their members btw). PdeR has been threatening a right wing replacement treaty if we say no (we can say no that aswell btw) and labour are promising collective bargaining legislation (a promise they cannot keep).

In Dublin. I don't know if Unite as a whole has a position on Lisbon.
Nothing will motivate the lazy / apathetic / Americanised / west-British types to embrace their culture and the Irish language.
