    Lisbon and the Death Penalty

I spotted this discussion going on in the peoples republic website.

What do the legal eagles of P.ie make of it? Is it true or not true? Why has this not been thrashed out on any debate to date apart from Jim Corr on his own.

Tip: turn down the volume with Ml Jackson blaring in the backround. It's obviously put together by someone who first language is not English.

Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK

Not true, it's outlawed in the EU. Red herring.

    It's certainly an interesting argument:

'Vote No to Lisbon because it incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights'!

European Union (EU) and EU Policy on Death Penalty

The EU strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances. Still a large number of executions are taking place and many countries retain the capital punishment de facto or in their legislation. The EU has drawn up policy guidelines on the death penalty. These guidelines provide inter alia a set of criteria for making representations and outline minimum standards to be applied in countries retaining the death penalty.
CONSILIUM - EU Human Rights Policy

The European Union, as foreseen in all the Treaties since the Treaty of Rome, is based upon and defined by universal principles of liberty and democracy, respect for the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms. Adherence to these principles constitutes the foundation and basic prerequisite for peace, security and prosperity and the EU is fully committed to promote them in its common foreign and security policy.

The European Union (EU) has long since been against the death penalty, supporting the European Convention, and its 2000 Charter of Fundamental Rights included a ban on the death penalty. The Charter will be made legally binding if the Treaty of Lisbon is fully ratified. The treaty also has a provision for the EU to join the Council of Europe and accede to the European Convention on Human Rights. The EU has been an active promoter of abolition worldwide and has been promoting a UN convention against it, however some national governments such as Poland have opposed such moves.

    Found this link.

It seems to confirm the death penalty will be reintroduced for riots and war.
