Like the distortion?

Ireland will have one vote at the first stage of voting. Same as Germany and the UK and even Malta. Then a perfectly reasonable check comes in with the population count but only if the first stage shows at least 15 countries (with one vote each) in favour. Interesting fact is that if the 13 smallest countries decide they don't like a proposal they can kill it even though the 13 represent less than 10% of the EU's population. Think about that - less than 10% of the EU's population can stop a proposal for an EU law. Now that's some power grab by the powerful elites , is it not.

Like them, but there should be something on the fact that Irish fishermen are struggling to survice while having to dump their catches at sea becasue of fishing quotas.

Fair enough, but I reckon there is a lot of sympathy out there for the Fishing communities in this country and it would do no harm to bring to the attention of average Joe what’s going on with the Irish fishing industry.

Agreed - attention to facts is long overdue:

Irish landings of fish have more than doubled since Ireland joined the EU in 1973 – from 86,000 t in 1973 to 185,000 t in 2007.

Irish boats have been landing an increasing share of the fish caught in Irish waters - from an average of 16% in the 1970s to around 25% in the 1990s and up to now.

Under the Common Fisheries Policy, access to Ireland’s 6 mile coastal zone is confined to Irish registered fishing vessels and vessels from Northern Ireland.

The size of the Irish fishing fleet has actually gone up. Over the same period, the size of the fishing fleets across the EU has shrunk by 20%.

Between 2000 and 2006, direct EU aid to the Irish fishing industry came to € 65.5 million. Between 2007 and 2013, there will be a further € 42.5 million of EU support to Irish
fishing.

The Common Fisheries Policy is currently up for Review. The Review has commenced and a new policy framework will be in place from 2012.
