    German Airstrike if lisbon had been in force?

    The german airforce has killed 70 civilians in an airstrike. Just consider if lisbon had been in force. Most likely those NATO strikes would have been EU approved with Ireland and a few other exercising the "constructive abstention mechanism" under article 31.1 TEU. But under constructive abstention we could not take action impeding EU actions including condeming the bombings at the UN or in any public forum. Strange form of "neutrality". Think very carefully before ticking the yes box on october 2nd.

    I can add this claim to the ridiculous list of things people claim agreeing to Lisbon will change;
    So far leading the pack of the most stupid are; legalise abortion, lower the minimum wage to €1.84.... allow gay marriage, make Ireland join Schengen and now....make Ireland send troops into the Afghanistan war....

    How long before someone claims Lisbon will force mothers to eat their own babies?

    Furthermore qualified majority applies on foreign affairs if a strategic decision is already in place. so in fact we could be compelled to support the bombings. Plus if the PSC group was involved we would not be able to interfere with their action as they are "masters of their own house" as long as their actions are within the scope of the strategic decision.

    Yes it is ridiculous. We already have troops in the Afghanistan war.

    so germany launched the airstrike as a "warning" on voting No for Lisbon?

    or are you saying if i vote no will you be able to go back in time and prevent the airstrike?

    The usual suspects are blathering on about how our neutrality will be affected if the Lisbon treaty is passed. Do they actually think that the serious military players in NATO care one jot whether Ireland is “neutral” or not? We are so militarily lightweight (probably the smallest defense force in Europe, with absolutely no air force) that in the event of any sort of conflict our participation or lack of would make no difference to the outcome. If it was really serious and necessary NATO would occupy us in a heartbeat, (and apologize for the necessity of it) when the conflict was over. So it beats me why people get hot under the collar about our neutrality.

    Try reading what he actually wrote, instead of what you want to see. If this is an indication of your comprehension skills then it's a wonder you were even able to read the treaty.
    He is using what happened in Afghanistan to demonstrate a point. That even if we are not a military presence in an EU common military operation, we would be unable to offially critise such actions. (if yown comprehension skills are up scratch)
