    Leitrim Local Elections 2009

What is the present situation with the Leitrim Local Election 2009? Who is running, not running, not declared and how do people see it turning out?

The Local Elections realy got under way around North Leitrim at the weekend with Ferguson (FF), McGloin (FG) & Colreavy (SF) all out canvassing around the Kinlough area. Has all the candidates been confirmed yet? In the Manorhamilton area I think it is Ferguson (FF), Munday (FF), McDermott (FG), Dolan (FG), McGloin (FG), Colreavy (SF) & McSharry (Ind) running. Are there any more?

Republican Sinn Féin are fielding a candidate, Thomas Kelly for Manorhamilton Electoral Area.

Interesting that RSF are going running one. Not that they have any real prospect of winning, but it's rare they ever pop up around these parts.

The runners in each area are:
    Ballinamore (5)
FF - Caillin Ellis and Paddy O'Rourke
FG - Damien Brennan, Gordon Hughes and John McCartin
SF - Martin Kenny + there is a second candidate, don't know the name

    Carrick (7)
FF - Sinead Guckian, Gerry Kilraine, Liam McElgunn and Sean McGowan
FG - Gerry Reynolds, Thomas Mulligan and John Ward
    Lab - John Feely
SF - No smoke here yet
Grn - Garreth McDaid (ex of this parish)
Oth - Enda Stenson and Des Guckian

    Dromahair (5)
FF - Mary Bohan and Francie Gilmartin
FG - Enda McGloin, John McTernan and Sean Loughlin
    SF - Padraig Fallon
    Grn - Johnny Gogan
    Ind - Gerry Dolan

And you've listed Manor above, for which there are also 5 seats.

FF's minimalist approach might have worked in some areas in the GE, but running two in 5-seaters in silly IMO, leaving whole areas (such as Drumshanbo and Cloone) free for their rivals to plunder. They'll be under pressure, though perhaps not to the extent that they will in other parts of the country. They'll probably hold onto the two in Dromahair and Ballinamore, though i'm not sure re Manor. Hold three in Carrick, they may do it again, but McElgunn could be unseated unless he ups his vote in Carrick, Kilraine could get a good vote. FG will return their outgoing numbers, and will be aiming for a third seat in Carrick, might have a tight job getting it, but it's more likely than winning 3/5 in the other areas. Can't see the Shinners or Labour making headway, though the SF vote will probably increase to some degree. Outgoing Independents to be returned, and it's now or never for McSharry in Manor.

I have been enquiring about this and am told that you are telling lies! Thomas is a very good community activist in the Kinlough area but supporters of his are denying that he will be seeking election. Please provide some evidence of your claim. Surely he would have announced this by now if he was running!

Interesting that the former Labour Party organiser for the west of Ireland and Dublin based candidate is seeking a seat in Carrick, hasnt a hope,he presided over the greatest haemorrhaging of elected councillors and members in Connaught/Ulster during his tenure,he wouldnt organise a pi##up in a brewery.

It was announced last week that a candidate would be running in Bundoran. The same person who told me that piece of information (and who's from south Donegal) also said that Kelly is running. I had no reason not to believe it, but maybe it's not true.

Is Gareth McDaid still pretending to be a green. Saw him on the box last night, does he not know how much of a pompous little ************************* he really is. Whos he trying to kid, I hope the people of Carrick tell him where to go in no uncertain terms.

I see that you were right but you were also wrong. Thomas Kelly is running but not for RSF. He is running as an independant and getting an excellent reception around Kinlough. Alot of people think that he can take the final seat although I think he might fall just short. People are saying that he will take votes from all other candidates. Ferguson is FF so enough said there. TK lives in the same area so will pick up the local vote, Siobhan McGloin is said to be suffering from her poor previous record as a counciler and the votes which were expected to switch from Ferguson are now said to be going to TK instead. Michael Colreavy will lose alot of the republican vote in Kinlough to TK but he still should be comfortably elected on June 5th. The biggest loser to TK will be Gabriel McSharry. He will pick up very few votes from Glenade down. The least affected candidates will be Frank Dolan & Sean McDermott although TK is originally from Glenfarne so will pick up a few votes in that area. My up to date predictions are as follows:

    Dolan (FG)
    Colreavy (SF)
    McDermott (FG)
    Ferguson (FF)
    McGloin (FG)

    Kelly (Ind)
    McSharry (Ind)
    Munday (FF)
