    Leitrim Local Elections '08

Does anyone have any views on the prospective candidates in the '08 Local Elections?

Will the disenfranchised Leitrim people bother to vote, seeing we have no say in the Dail.....a right taken away from us

Perhaps we should only vote for non-party candidates.

I, also, heard that there could be a few 'new Irish' running in the Carrick ward.

I'd agree on voting for non-party candidates.

If only...if only there had been an agreement in the 2007 GE to have a unified non-party candidate, we'd have taken one from Roscommon!
The vested party machines were too big for us

Francie should get in....after all didn't he bump Mooney?

Yeah, carricK will be the real hum dinger...7 seats, the last one to go to either FF, FG (if they can get a candidate) or SF.
Greens will run Mc Daid, who will SF run??
Manorhamilton the same, Dromahair the same, and Ballinamore, FF to lose 1 seat. Battle with Mc carin and Hughes for the 2nd seat.
Will there ba a back lash against FF??
Will Comiskey run? They say he may run in the Drumkeerin area of the Dromahair ward, would like to see the back of Cllr. Bohan or his favourite FG Councillors, Mc Tiernan and Mc Gloin!!!!!
    Interesting.......

Several issues are coming to the fore.....some of which do not even register on the national radar.

The main one is the resumption of Leitrim people emigrating.
The other is the the loss of Dail representation for County Leitrim.

The rumour mill has it that there'll be a lot more independents this time round....thus, possibly resulting in surprise gains/losses.
For some strange reason, the SF seem to be very, very quiet.

Don't forget the downgrading of Sligo General Hospital with the moving of cancer services to Galway and Limerick. Big concerns in Leitrim generally on that issue and the co-locaton plan. I have it on good account that the Greens have done enormous damage to themselves in the area having vocally supported the moving of breast cancer care to Galway. Interesting times ahead.

Someone should tie this guy up for a few weeks before the election to stop him being elected.

He is an emabrressment to Politics and LCC.

I feel sorry for anyone that feels that a vote for Francie Gilmartin is a vote for progress in Leitrim.

This is not true, and is the type of ill informed statement that leads to unwarranted anger towards the government decision to consolidate Cancer services in Ireland.

Lets be clear, Diagnostics and Surgery are moving to Galway. All other cancer services will be retained in SGH.

And can you please explain how Sligo General Hospital has been "Downgraded"???

Lets be clearer, this will mean that patients from the northwest will have to endure the travelling both for diagnostics and then surgary and I can assure you that the anger is very real and very much warranted for the simple reason that the Breast Cancer Unit at SGH has outcomes as good as anywhere else. It is always depressing to hear residents of the area putting party before people.
Regarding 'downgrading', SGH is loosing Prostate and Colon Cancer unit (To Limerick) and Breast Cancer (to Galway) Orthopaedic bed capacity has recently been halved. Perhaps you think that amounts to developing the facility?
Continue to reside in your little bubble, the locals will tell the tale.

Say what you like, the centre of excellence approach is the best option to ensure that the mistakes of the past dont happen again.

In time the "Locals" will come to agree with this. I understand that the travel issue is a big concern for patients but you will find that anyone with a brain in their head knows deep down that Diagnosis and Surgery at Galway and limerick will be of the highest standard.

Travel or not, i know where i'd like to be diagnosed! If a hospital does not have the throughput of patients, it simply cannot ensure excellence in the true sense of the word.

SGH is a fine Hospital, i know because i worked their for many years. I am sure it will continue to provide many complementary cancer services to the people of the North West after Diagnosis and surgery are undertaken in the centres of excellence.

Your posts suggets that ALL cancer services are being cut. This is simply not the case.

In relation to your acqusations regarding Orthopaedic cases, where is your figures??
