Sligo North Leitrim Green Party Candidate not Ratified

Anyone know whats behind this decision?

    http://www.unison.ie/sligo_champion/sto ... e_id=15457

An aspiring Green Party candidate has expessed “surprise and disappointment” at her party’s failure to ratify her as a runner in the forthcoming General Election.

With the Green Party expected to reveal the identity of their candidate for the Sligo/North Leitrim constituency within the next fortnight, party activist, Ms. Patricia Gardiner of Martin Savage Terrace, Sligo, has been told she will not be the chosen one.

Having been nominated locally, Ms. Gardiner, who represented the Greens in the 1994 local elections in an inner city Dublin constituency, was confident her candidature would be ratified by head office.

But she was disappointed to be informed in writing from Head Office that she would not be on the ticket.

sorry to read this. Patricia Gardiner would have been a strong candidate. She ran in South Westt Inner City in Dublin in 2004 and polled well but was beaten for the last seat.

There's a selection process ongoing in Sligo with a candidate to be announced within the next two weeks.
I'm not sure of what's going on there, but there are strict procedures agreed by the party for selection conventions. They are all being followed and no one can be announced until they are complete.

The story says that she was "nominated locally" - does that mean she was selected by the local group? If so it would be very odd for her not to be ratified.

This would be a big surprise if it actually happened. Personally cant see it happening but since i have now said that, it will probably happen.

There is increasing speculation that the former Sligo Labour Party councillor, Brian Scanlon, is to be the Green Party candidate in the Sligo-North Leitrim constituency in the general election. Mr Scanlon, however, has this afternoon dismissed the rumours. There were increasing signs that the Green Party were about to confirm Mr Scanlon as their candidate, but it seems an internal row within the party has put matters on hold.

green canditate for Sligo N Leitrim

[ There have been 2 nominations for the greens.
Former Labour Councillor Brian Scanlon and an unnamed.

Scanlon is part of the Connolly group in Sligo and has far left wing tendancies.

He has also been critical of the labour party canditate

Scanlon has just joined the greens, so I suspect that this is a ploy by the Connolly group that the greens are falling for.

I predict that it will backfire as Cllr McGarry will mop up the transfers from Scanlon.

Now that Cake has got the nomination, what happened with this Gardiner woman that the party would not ratify her? Whats the story there?

The Greens are seriously scrapping the bottom of the barrell with the Scanlon nomination.

Ya Know, I was only on the blower last night with a buddy of mine from Ballymote (whos a serious tree hugger) asking how he got on at the protest in Galway yesterday and he was furious about this Scanlon guy running for the Greens. The place was crying out for a green candidate and now they have one, no one will vote for him.

He echoed what was said above about this being a ploy to take votes away from labour. Honest to christ what the f*ck is goin on up there and how did the Greens fall for this? They've gone down in my estimation if this is case.
Voters don't decide issues, they decide who will decide issues.
