Ok, so say the Government lasts until 2012, Durkan will be 66 going into the election. 71 when he comes out the far side.

Is there something going on here?

Scully has to be a certainty for the FG ticket. Is the convention being left to the last minute on purpose so that possibly Durkan won't run and Lawlor will sneak in at no.1 spot?

lawlor could easily beat scully at a convention without durkans support he is well got within the party so i am told the view of scully he has had a couple of shots at it now and maybe time has run out for him

    Hmmm. Interesting argument.

Lawlor had two spins of the wheel, and managed to hit the jack-pot both times (county council x2).

Scully has been running elections since 1994. He's only been elected three times (town council x2, county council x1).

Scully ran for TC at age 20 in 94 and did not campaign seriously (was a sweeper for French and O'Reilly) and then left politics until 04. lawlor only joined FG in 08, Knowing the wind was in FG sails. He has been trading on his family name not his work rate. Lawlor would not get the support of the Naas branch for the nomination but I believe he has set up a Kill zombie branch with a lot of family members and friends hoping that will see him through. Durkan will be carried out in a box rather then retire, age has nothing to do with it anyway, look at Jackie healy rae and PJ sheehan, well into their 70's.

Interesting, that even his own party can't find anything to say about Anthony Lawlor!

Anyway, this thread is convincing me that the cynic in me is correct, and Kildare ain't the West Wing. Local, parish pump, family dynasty, vested interest, self serving politics.

of course, me sitting here on my laptop spouting off, is just so going to make a difference
But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

that is the main reason why he could win.however fg members have to be in the party for two years before they are allowed to cast a vote, the longer time goes by the biggger the advantage to lawlor

Many others in the organisation will have left the field before the Deputy will.
In these circumstances, what would Michael Collins do?
