But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
This is true. Think its common knowledge now. It was in the Liffey Champion newspaper last week.
This sad news will throw a spanner in the works for FF in the constituency.
If Fitzpatrick doesn't run, then who will the 2nd FF candidate be in the next GE?
Sitting FF councillors are:
- Willie Callaghan
- Paul Kelly
- Liam Doyle
And then there's his son Darragh, but he bombed in the locals last year.
Anyhow, Labour and FG will have alot more room to manouver here. I reckon the parts of Kildare North vacated by Fitzpatrick will benefit FG more than Labour.
Therefor, my predicitons now are:
- Áine Brady (FF)
- Emmett Stagg (Lab)
- Bernard Durkan (FG)
- Darren Scully (FG)
All FG gotta do now is keep the ship steady with Scully in Naas and Durkan taking votes from rural west parts of constituency off Fitzpatrick.
Kildare could go from 1 FG out of 7 to 3 FGs out of 7. Happy days!
Yes this is true, I heard fitzpatrick on the radio this morning confirming that he has the disease and will not be running in the next GE.
Intersting analysis Nick, but what about Murphy and John McGinley of Labour who will be running. Mind you I suspect Paul Kelly will run for FF or if not him it will be Doyle. Very interesting times ahead. A real dog fight in prospect for that last seat with FG, FF and Lab all certain of at least 1.
It's official now he won't run?
If we look at our predicitions, we're assuming that the "top half" of the constituency will field the most candidates and will elect the most candidates.
The only Naas area candidate we're looking at is Scully. So you take Naas, Sallins, Kill, Johnstown and you got about 30-40k people, which is about 40% of the constituency. There's 2 quotas in the Naas area!
I'm sure the other parties won't leave all that to Scully. Labour have Paddy MacNamara in Sallins and FF have Callaghan and Lawless in Naas/Sallins.
Funny thing is, when you take Scully out of Naas, there's bugger all decent Dáil candidates left in the town.
Callaghan as a TD? Holy cow!
One would hope (not presume, based on the last GE) that "old school" FF is going to get smacked, perhaps if all resources go behind Lawless there is a possibility, but i don't see it.
Is there any logic that Scully could bring another FG in his slipstream - as a occasional political observer, i think naas could be one of the areas where the influx of new voters to naas could significantly change the status quo this time round.
But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
Being from Naas, I can tell you that it's not as "commuter belt" as you think. The majority of estates in Naas are fairly established at this stage. Some "recent" developments around the fringes like Craddockstown etc, but the majority of the electorate there are well established Naas residents.
So the "new wave" Labour vote that plagued Leixlip and Celbridge in the 2009 LE won't be as severe in Naas.
Anyways, Naas had zero FG county councillors in 2004 LE, now it has 2 (Anthony Lawlor took the hinterlands of Naas which should be classified as Naas from a practicle point-of-view).
Resources behind Lawless? How are FF faring these days financially now that their "traditional" fundraising methods are probably non-existant. Credit to Lawless though, he's Dáil material, but it's gonna be insurmountable for 2 FF seats in Kildare North, and Minister Brady has her name all over one of them.
