Sure hunger strike T.D.'s were elected here and there but to little effect in the larger scheme of things. It wasn't until the P.D.'s arrived on the scene that things got shaken up a bit. And in fairness that was just a transfer of seats from Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

That section of the electorate is still there. Sinn Fein enjoy alot of the old Workers Party support base now.

I still think voters will polarise. There will obviously be a few exceptions, but not many.

After the next election Labour will be the king makers, either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael will be their dancing partner, depending on what way the numbers are on D-Day +1.

The days of Independent's holding sway over governments (of either side) is at an end for a good time to come.

    McGinley to declare?

According to KFM Radio this morning, Maynooth based Labour Councillor John McGinley is about to, or has declared his intention to seek a Dáil seat. It was in reference to an interview in this week's Liffey champion apparently.

Not having seen the piece can't say whether it was a long term, sure we all want to end up there one day, ambition marker kind of thing, or if it was a more immediate looking for a place on ticket in 2012 declaration. Although the tone suggested the latter.

    Interesting development either way.

Would it be possible for McGinley could get elected ahead of Stagg?

well there is more population at mcginleys end of the constiuency but its a pool of votes that murphy and durkan are drawing from as well.......stagg is wellr egarded at the naas end of the constiteunce and would I;'d say fget transfers frome evrywhere.....there are a lot of new voters ion celbruidge and leixlip who could go anywhere but I suspect if they are inclined to vote labour they may go with stagg as they have heard of him

So McGinley throwing his hat in the ring probably rules our Paddy MacNamara's chances.

I don't know a whole lot about McGinley, but I'll probably stick to my guns and reckon Stagg will get the only Labour seat.

    Mc Ginley as a candidate

If McGinley is running the only reason can be that McNamara is not running. If McNamara does not seek a nomination then the obvious next plan would be to approach Murphy. She and Gilmore are still on good terms personally. Putting McGinley up would be intended to stop such an approach. How this plays will tell a lot about how serious the LP is about the next election. McGinley is older than Stagg and in Durkan’s turf. He doesn’t have a snowballs and is probably in his final term on the council and will not make any serious attempt to get elected. Stagg is protecting himself by putting up a stooge. If Gilmore lets him then we we will know the outcome of the next with the LP happy to hold third and be junior partners to FG . So this is an interesting signpost. Watch this space.
