The first map shows support for divorce in 1986 - as can be seen the only areas to vote yes were Celbridge, Straffan, Leixlip, Allen/Allenwood and Ballyroe (I think). The vote for Divorce was higher in the east of the county.
In 1995, much of east Kildare voted yes to Divorce, but in almost every rural area, support was still over 40%. Support was especially strong around the bases of Jack Wall and Emmet Stagg (Wall wasn't a TD but the high divorce yes vote around Athy corresponds closely with the area of Labour dominance there...)
Note : I think the Nurney tally is mistaken. The tally is 68% Yes 32% No, but I reckon it should actually be 32% Yes 68% No given that Nurney only voted 17% Yes in 1986.
This map shows the proportion of Catholics in the 2006 census. The legend is...
<80% Lt Blue
80-85% Dk Blue
85-90% Green
90-95% Dk Red
>95% Lt Red
As can be seen there is some inverse relationship between the proportion of Catholics and the size of the Yes Vote...
