So Fianna fáiler or Shinners locally won’t get their lead from the national organisation when it comes to promoting their policies locally. Is that what yer saying?
What’s said on the doorsteps when they’re out campaigning here in Laois is different to what they promote and the way they vote in County Hall.
People voted for an individual because they had a nice looking suit on them that day they called looking for a vote? Or that they’ll vote for a Fine Gael candidate because the family have always voted Fine Gael?
Come off it.
Voters are a bit more astute that that nowadays.
Political animals like yourselves on Politics.ie think they know the ins and outs of every party or independent candidate when it comes to local elections, and ye probably do, but the ordinary people in Laois are worried about bread and butter issues affected them locally and most don’t give a fiddlers elbow about who delivers for them, as long as it’s delivered.
If an Independent candidate is advocating capitalist ideals or socialist views are you saying because she’s a nice looking gal that voters will vote for her and they cannot distinguish between the policies?
I for one am sick to the back teeth reading about Government councillors here in Laois bemoaning their party for introducing policies that go against their grains locally.
At the end of the day it’s about policies and not about individuals and the way Sally O’Brien might look at ya.
Swingingdoor, I would like to believe on much of what you have said, but for now let me show you where 18 of the 25 seats are destined, irrsepective of what happened over the life time of this present Council ............................

Nope, local election voting is mainly about personalities and candidates...though good looking suits have shag all to do with it. Ultimately in 60-70% of cases, voters will simply vote for the local candidate...and if there's two local candidates from an area, they'll vote 1-2 in favour of the local candidates, unless one of these is a no-hope candidate. I suspect that a number of Laois voters may feel, that given the limited powers of local councils and limited finances available, that policies are ultimately not going to be implemented, so they'll vote for the local man/woman who may at least get a few things done for the local area.
Phonix I wish you all the best in your quest to get a seat in the Mountmellick Electoral Area next year, if Michael Moloney puts his name forward in Mountmellick, I'd be putting my money on Mr Moloney.
Francis Emerson has gone very quiet, her political career will be the same as her post, HERE TODAY GONE TOMORROW
Haven’t been a student of the local political scene for the past few years I want to ask Councillor Michael Moloney, is it his intention to contest the June local elections?
The reason why I ask this is, if it is his intention, irrespective of what area he intends standing in, could he inform me, (as a member of the public he represents) why I should vote for him?
Could he also please detail what he has achieved for the people of Laois, not just from the Mountmellick electoral area who voted for him 4½ years ago?
Thank You.
I think this is what local politics is all about. A person who is prepared to put their policies on the table and one who can detail his or her past achievements in their representative careers.
If the answers to the questions are not forthcoming, I’d (a): feel it would be a weakness on Councillor Moloney, (b): it may show he has achieved nothing or (c): he has no policies only the ones that see him whining about everything, which is a cover for his politic incompetence.
It’ll be interesting to see whether he will list his achievements (if he has any) and what are his political plans for the next 5 years if he’s reelected.
My voting record on the rezonings in The County Development Plan. As an example I alone was against the zoning of the flood plains in Portarlington for development. On the day the Portarlington Local Area Plan was before the Coucil for decision ( Oct 07), I could not get a seconder for a vote against the rezoning. So you had 24 Councillors for building on the Flood plains 1 against. Less than six weeks later all the area rezoned was flooded with overflowing waters from the Barrow and again in August just gone. Below you will see where on these very same flood plains in February last on the other side of the Barrow the Council gave planning to allow Tesco to build, again I was the only elected repesentative in Laois ( both local & National - google Irish Indep) to oppose this and thankfully this week Bord Pleanala overturned the Council's decision (below from The Leinster Express)

AN Bord Pleanala has refused a planning application by Tesco for a supermarket in Portarlington, overturning a planning decision by Laois County Council.
The proposed development was to consist of a foodstore of 3,281 square metres gross floor area (2,180 square metres net) with off licence, roundabout and access provisions from the New Relief Road and associated car parking. The development also inclADVERTISEMENTuded ancillary signage, a 7 metre high totem sign, service areas, landscaping, circulation areas, flood relief works and riverside walkway access and all site development works at the New Relief Road, off Market Square, Cooltederry in Portarlington.
Outlining its reasons and considerations in refusing permission for the development, An Bord Pleanala stated: "The site of the proposed development lies partly within the River Barrow and River Nore candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC Site Code 003262), a site of European importance. It is also located in close proximity to the River Barrow and on part of what is currently recognised as a floodplain.
"Having regard to the submissions made in connection with the application and appeal, and notwithstanding the flood risk mitigation measures proposed, the Board is not satisfied that the proposed flood relief works would not have significant adverse effects on both the natural heritage of the area and the future use of the river and adjoining lands (including the loss of part of an existing floodplain and the associated risk of increased flooding of other lands in the vicinity). It is considered that the proposed development would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.”
Having regard to the visually exposed and prominent nature of the site, which adjoins the River Barrow, it is considered that the proposed development would be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development due to: (a) the inadequate separation distance between the river bank and the proposed foodstore building and service area compound, and the excessively cramped character of the residual, riverside space; (b) the unsatisfactory visual character of the service area compound, which would be predominant in views across the River Barrow, and (c) the excessive scale and bulk and the unsatisfactory architectural appearance would seriously injure the amenities of the area.
Cllr Michael Moloney said he was not surprised by An Bord Pleanala's decision. He said only eight weeks prior to the council granting planning permission to the development, the Portarlington Area Plan was "totally opposed to development on the floodplain". He said the local authority had completely ignored communication from the OPW and Department of the Environment on the matter. "It raises the question whether responsibility for planning should be taken away from the county councils," he said.
The wisdom of local councillors backing development of the floodplain was also questioned by Cllr Moloney.
I Will give more details of my record in due course.
