Emo really is an interesting constituency and there are quite a few contenders here. Ultimately the final seat or seats will probably boil down to (a) the degree to which the new(er) residents of places like Portarlington turnout to vote and the way they vote and (b) the way Emo, Vicarstown and The Heath votes. My guess at this stage? The strong traditional Fine Gael vote in Stradbally, added to a general swing towards FG overall, will see Deegan top the poll. If there is a decent turnout in the newer estates, Aidan Mullins will stand a very good chance despite Sinn Fein not having contested this areas in the previous LEs; partly on the basis that new residents may swing towards anti-establishment candidates this time out but may not know enough about independent candidates to opt for these and hence go for a party candidate. SF were also very quick 'out of the gates' in Port with a leaflet drop just after the New Year. Cribbin is by no means assured, I would guess, and will have a fight on his hands to hold his seat - while FF would be expected to hold their seat, if the anti-FF swing is strong especially in the commuter belt as is suspected then a 'shock' defeat could possibly be on the cards here unless the 'old Portarlington vote' comes out strong enough for FF. Ultimately, my guess is that it will be a fight for the final two seats between Emerson, Mitchell and Cribbin, and possibly Guijit-Lalor also if Labour have a good day.

I don't see either Winifred Cox or Grace Halford or as I was informed by a FG councillor last night that FG HG were going to interview a third person, a young man ( sir name - Mitchell) but as all three do not have any public profile and FG not having any organisation in Port ,I see no impact on the contest.

FG in Mountmellick (formely Tinnahinch) have not yet finally decided on three or four candidates.

I am assured that there will be an announcement next Tuesday and if that goes ahead according to plan a further announcement will happen soon after, in reply to the final Q.

Michael i attended the same public meeting as yourself on monday night in relation to the dump at Kyletalesha. I was impressed by your contribution and i hope you remain an independent councillor. That said Michael can I ask you to persist from your anti republican rant, the only one you let down is yourself when you go down this road. you have more to offer the people of
Laois than this worn out crap. Good luck in the election and i look forward to meeting you during the course of the campaign, you never know we might even shake hands. We will more than likely be forever political opponents but thats life and that politics. slan

Judging from articles published in recent times in the Leinster express it seems Michael Moloney has a very anti republican agenda. Now that may be his personal view and he is entitled to that. I do not believe that it will gain him a any votes in any part of laois.
Cant remember the exact comments he made but I think he referred to Shinners as criminals and that they gain there election expenses from crimianal activities.

My opinion is that this type of claim is rubbish . However Does that mean that Michael Moloney is accusing Stephen Lynch in mountmellick, and by extension his family as been involved in crime relating to this election? Is MM saying that Sinn Fein members in Laois are criminals?

This is a good and relevent question you pose, and I think that michael will have to consider that when he goes on his anti republican rant not only does he insult good people who are respected members of this community but he also links them to crime. This is very hurtful for the people involved and this is why he should consider very carefully his comments.

I agree Michael Moloney has to be very careful not to offend , voters who have no intention of casting their ballot in his favour. (sarcasm )

I think that SF supporters are a little more thick skinned than we are giving them credit for.

Does anyone know if Michael Gormely will stand as Independent on Mountmellick Town Council? Is it true that Mitchell is FG Candidate in Port? and why is Clr Michael Moloney taking so long to make up his mind?
