[QUOTE=feet first;1302603]Some of the treads have taken a turn for the worse. Surely everyone goes to mass for their personal and diverse reasons, attending mass is a virtue not a vice.

Nothwithstanding . the shape of Laois county council will look very different after the next election.
Emo will definitely be different , with probably two indepdents assuming that Michael Moloney and Paul Mitchell will get in ,

I would always lean twoards Fianna Fail and am a republican at heart, and I think people are missing the big picture in the emo area. I fancy Aidan Mullins of the Sinn Fein party to do himself justice. I know the family and they are all decent people with a good track record. He himself has done a lot for port over the years. How Fianna Fail never snapped him up is a mystery to me.

F Emerson is new to the scene and is angered over the bad planning in her area. both herself and mullins should be in the running for seats.

Mitchell wont have the parlon bounce that he had the last time and will suffer.
Also his property interests in Bulgeria must be diluting his effectivness as a councillor.

Has Councillor Moloney gone to ground?
For the past few months he’s been a regular contributor to this thread.
Now all of a sudden, he’s gone very, very quiet.
I posed a question to him on this thread on the 29th of November and since then he’s avoided answering it.
Could it be he’s been caught out?
He was caught out when he had no positive answers on how to address the housing issue in Laois and now, because of his silence on the roads issues I posed him, he has run for cover. His silence on the roads issue is telling, and should be taken for what it is. He’s barren when it comes to policies.
The electorate should be told of this.

He stopped posting when somebody made an allegation that he was attending 10 o clock mass every day in portlaoise in order to get votes.

yes it appears michael has gone to ground alright. You see when it comes it political debate he is barren. He will engage in slagging until the cows come home, but policies now thats his weakness he makes them up as he goes along. A bit like his approach to standing in elections he will take a good long look around to see were he can find a space. only trouble with this type of politics is that when you have burnt all your bridges you fall into the water and drown.

Id say you have all the answers pal. whats your stance on greenhouse gases.

Where do you stand on decentralisation?

How would you reform the Hse?

unless you can offer a real alternative don,t be putting down a good man.

    Well done Shoe In.
It’s about time someone else on the thread started asking questions from the candidates and their party hacks how they would deal with issues, if they were sitting in the council chambers, instead of engaging in hypothetical gobbledygook about who’d get in and who wouldn’t. At the end of the day, regardless of who takes what seats, it’s polices that will dictate the direction Laois County Council is going to be driven for the next five years.
Like Shoe In, I too want to know from the candidates how they’d tackle the issues of greenhouse gases, decentralisation and the reformiation of the HSE?
However, I’d much rather stick to local, rather than national or global issues.
Just an aside, I don’t think anyone posting on the thread is, as Shoe In puts it “putting down a good man,” rather they are expressing opinions, to which, we may not agree with some of them, but should acknowledge they have every right to express them.

Ok Swinging door. The reason certain publics reps wont have a discussion on policies is that they have no policies. But here is an interesting policy issue which will have to high on the agenda of all councillors next year. Please remember that FF and the PDs cause this problem.

The latest live register figures were published by the CSO last week. They are available on their website. Here is where laois stands:

    November 2007 November 2008

    Portlaoise 1,199 2,338
    Portarlington 1,047 1,934
    Rathdowney 408 693

Live register figures include part time workers and those on jobseekers benifit so this is not strictly unemployment.

However this is still shocking for the two biggest towns in Laois, to have such a high jump in one year, What will it be like next June???
If Laois county council could not attract any industry to laois in the boom times, what chance have we in these difficult economic times?

Umemployment is now a big issue in Laois and cannot be swept under the political carpet any longer.

Unemployment is a big issue for Laois and should be an election issue come next june.

One person who wont suffer is Tom Parlon IFA OPW TD and now top dog in the construction industry federation, Talk about jobs for the boys.

Did anyone see Barry Cowen on the prime time documentry about Travelers?

Id say he felt bad about getting the mercedes dirty! He nearly had to be dragged to the halting site by RTE to see the conditions,

Any jobs that are available will fall to FF lackeys, also note that the big developers that back FF finances used cheap eastern european labour to build estates such as fairgreen in portlaoise.

IN answer to your Question "what can be done? " Dont vote for FF OR any former pds or even FFers claiming to be indo, encourage your friends to do likewise. There are councillors in office 20+ years in this county who are useless. we all know who they are. The pin stripe suit brigade.
