The full implications for health and safety should be made known, said Cllr Brian Fitzgerald this week after unwired fluorescent tubes held in his hands lit up, while he stood under the existing 400kV power line at Batterstown Co. Meath.Cllr Fitzgerald called on the Government to force EirGrid to suspend all work on the preparation of plans for the announcement of a preferred route for high-power electricity cables through Meath pending a "full public inquiry" Cllr Fitzgerald said that he and his daughter Caitriona had been researching the health and safety implications of high-power electricity lines and decided to carry out their own tests. When they carried a number of new fluorescent light tubes into a field under the 400kV cables at Batterstown last week, they lit up in their hands. The experiment was repeated on Monday this week when up to 40 campaigners against the over-grounding of the cables through the county gathered at the same location, all carrying new fluorescent tubes. All the tubes lit up. "It`s not so long ago since the Government spent millions by rerouting a major road around a group of snails and, a few days ago, we heard about more Kerry snails that needed to be bypassed. Then we have Minister (John) Gormley`s campaign to save the planet through the use of energy-saving bulbs. Why doesn`t he come down to Meath and we`ll show him how he can save people`s lives by putting these cables underground. If anyone wants to see our `Star Wars` light swords, I`ll be willing to meet them anytime after dark," Cllr Fitzgerald said.
Never let it be said: some bright spark Councillors about the place...
