Rabbitte’s Communications Director quits Ely Place

Pat Rabbitte has suffered another serious setback with the resignation of Labour’s fulltime Communications Director Liam Cahill.

Cahill a former Programme Manager during the Rainbow Government and senior director of PR at INTEL and Bank of Ireland, quit Ely Place following months of frustration which culminated in the party’s disastrous handling of the Bertiegate affair.

It is reported in this weeks Phoenix Magazine that at the height of the affair Cahill had advised Rabbitte, if there was going to be a charge against Bertie, it should be just that, instead of a Mexican Standoff which saw the party attack then back down.

However it appears as usual Rabbitte ignored the advice of his experienced advisors and turned to new boy Adrian Langan, with the result Rabbitte lost a key advisor and Labour lost another 2% in the polls… give yourself a clap Pat!

Of course if Phoenix reports something about the Labour party then it MUST be true.....

Rabitte is now a huge liability to Labour, he has cuddled up to the blueshirts with such undisguised ambition and undiluted guile, that he has succeeded only in driving many potential labour voters.....What exactly is Labours unique selling point these days? .....Vote FG and cut out the middle man seems a logical conclusion for those agin the government, and if you are still left of centre surely SF and the Greens are looking like a recognizable destination for your votes....Result Labour is on hiding to nothing. For a man with a huge opinion of his own ability, Rabitte seems singularly lacking in that perception which all politicians with ambitions for power should possess.

How many blatant inaccuracies can you find in this post?

Apart from the title (Cahill was never based in Ely Place - he operated out of Leinster House), of course...

No. 1 - Cahill was a Programme Manager during the FF/Labour Government of 1992/4 - he was David Andrews' man on the Marine (with Ger Gervin running Defence).

No. 2 - it was AIB, not BoI.

No. 5 - That's not why he left.

No. 6 - (at least - I can't verify what was or was not said in private meetings about strategy on Bertiegate, other than that's not why he left) - Langan has been with the Party far longer than Cahill. About twice as long, by my count.

No. 7 - I think you'll find Labour lost 4 points in the last poll.

4 paragraphs, 7 very basic errors of fact (ignoring the speculation that we can't be absolutely certain is wrong, but can be reasonably sure never happened).
If you can't get even the basic facts right, then your (and the Phoenix's) speculation regarding the Bertiegate strategy doesn't exactly come up for any sort of serious consideration.

    Yadda yadda yadda (Yawn).....

How do you explain Rabbitte's high approval rating in the last MRBI poll?

I'm nearly sure that the fact that Cahill had quit was in either the Sunday Indo or Sunday Tribune last weekend

I'm referring to the way Phoenix reported the story - not the basic fact that Cahill quit.
