Brendan O'Carroll - member of Labour Party

During previous threads on "parachute candidates" etc., several Sinn Féin members have said that the only possible "celebrity" candidate they are likely to get in the medium term was Brendan O' Carroll - who lives in Dublin North West.

However O' Carroll was on Liveline just now, and described himself as a proud member of the Labour Party.

Can anyone clarify this? Why were some SF members of the opinion that he was an SF member/supporter?

I hadn't hear the Sinn Fein claim, but I'd be surprised. He's always been Labour, as far as I know, although not particularly mouthy about it. Wasn't his mother a TD or Lord Mayor or something for Labour back in the 1950s?

    He's stil rubbish, though.

he has stated in the past that he was a SF supporter.
He very publicly supported Mary Banotti in the Presidential Election.
He's now a Labour Party Member?!!?!

I remember O'Carroll saying a few years ago that he would consider standing for SF in elections but I don't recall the shinners ever suggesting that themselves. His other was a Labour councillor and maybe even Lord Mayor (?) so hardly surprising he is one himself. Who in their right mind would stand him as a candidate

He participated in a forgetable Democratic Left party political broadcast a number of years ago. If my memory serves me well, it was in the guise of his alter ego, "Mrs. Browne"

A comedian as a politician - how can we tell the difference? Though it would certainly make the Dail coverage worth watching.

I don't know anything about Brendan O'Carroll's political affiliations, but his mother was a Labour TD for Dublin North Central in the 1950s. She wasn't a Lord Mayor though.

He's truely a master of disguise!

I remember a poster for one of O'Carroll's show which went some like; "he's a comedian, he's a singer, he's an impersonator, is there anything that Brendan O'Caroll can't do?" to which some wag had added the grafitti..."...make me laugh".

Yeah I heard him state this on Liveline this afternoon. Why are you surprised. His mother was Labour TD back around the 50's or 60's I think.

I think he'd make some people actually lose their interest in politics...
