Labour Youth Campaign against EU Constitution

Labour Youth & the Connelly Youth Movement have joined forces to actively campaign against the proposed EU Constitution.

Following the recent National Forum on Europe “Youth Conference on the EU Constitution” on Saturday 09/04/05 self-identified members of Labour Youth distributed “No” literature to delegates as they left Dublin Castle. The leaflets were signed “Connelly Youth Movement”, the movement is the very small youth wing of the Communist Party of Ireland.

It would seem the movement has become a flag of convenience for disaffected members who are afraid to directly defy the pro-European Labour leadership and campaign as Labour Youth.

Wouldn't this be best included as part of the discussion going on here?

This is a pack of lies, Labour Youth were not handing out leaflets, has nothing to do with Connolly Youth and never will.

    Inaccurate and dishonest

This is simply put... Untrue and Incorrect.

Labour Youth was not distributing leaflets signed by “Connelly Youth Movement" or any leaflets for that matter. TKwhiskers I don't know what sort of information you are running with. I was at the Youth Conference as the representative from Labour Youth. I did openly identify myself as the International Officer of Labour Youth and openly state that Labour Youth is against the EU Constitutional Treaty. Labour Youth voted to oppose the Constitutional Treaty in a special conference on the 19th of February 2005

Labour Youth Position Paper on the EU Constitutional Treaty

Talking to others does not mean supporting them in an alliance. I was also talking to YFGers, Ogra FFers and several participants from various schools in a completely similar fashion.

By the way, Labour Youth does directly contrast its position from the Labour Party and have complete freedom to do so within the Labour Party. The Labour Youth Executive is also mandated to campaign against the EU constitutional treaty by its membership. I would hardly call standing up and stating Labour Youth opposition to the EU constitutional treaty as "afraid to directly defy the pro-European Labour leadership and campaign as Labour Youth". Labour Youth has no reason to fear the Labour Party and can express its opinions independently of the Labour Party. Perhaps this explains why Labour Youth membership has tripled in the last couple of years making us the fastest growing youth movement in Ireland. The Labour Party spokesperson on European Affairs - Ruairi Quinn was on the panel and knows that I represented the views of Labour Youth on the EU Constitutional Treaty.

TKwhiskers, Your information is misleading, completely untrue and totally inaccurate.

In the name of Truth and Honesty

And Ruairi Quinn has told me many times before that he fully supports the idea that Labour Youth can have their own position on any policy they wish.
He may not agree with their position this time, but that's not the point.
