    Labour calls for anti-nuclear campaign

The Labour Party is calling on the Government to take whatever action necessary to stop Britain expanding its nuclear power programme.

An official review due to be published in London today is expected to recommend the construction of six new nuclear plants to meet Britain's future energy needs.

The Irish Government has already said it will oppose the building of any such facilities.

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said today that renewable energy resources will be the way ahead in the North, and that The British government has no plans to build any nuclear power stations in Northern Ireland partly because of an agreement already reached with the Irish Government.

This is not politics, it is pure populism. The only thing wrong with the British decision to plan for modern power stations is the fact that they are going to be handed on a plate to the private moneybags sector.
Nuclear energy is one of tyhe most environmentaly acceptable form of energy production. A proper socialist party would be advocating a nuclear energy programme for Ireland.

Have to admit I would sit on the fence on this one as far as nuclear energy goes because I'm not convinced by either the pro or anti camps yet. The one serious issue I would have is the building of a nuclear plant in the north without consultation with the Irish Government. I think it would be a blatant disregard of the goodwill developed under the GFA between the two governments.

I see no one complains about Ireland buying electricity from the Uk which is generated by nuclear power. If the Brits said they were shutting down their nuclear plants tomorrow, the Irish govt would ************************ itself.

There is no nation on Earth that does pure undiluted hypocrisy like the Irish.

Actually, they call "investment in renewbale resources."

Having said that, nobody moves as fast as a Labour candidate legging it when asked to support the construction of a wind turbine.

ahhh, investment in renewables, that has the benefit of sounding great without providing any specifics whatsoever....

It's up there with the people who oppose incinerators and waste charges, but demand that someone magically collect their bins and recycle everything.
