Time for Labour and S.P (Joe Higgins) to unite?

I as a labour voter would like to see Eamon Gilmore move heaven and earth to bring back Joe Higgins into the Labour party. I would also like to see an informal alliance with Sinn Féin. This is to create a genuine left wing group able to take on the FF/FG type policies. There will be a vacuum when Labour enter government with FG, in a year or less.

I'm in favour of a Left alliance, but not of a merger of Parties. There are big differences between Labour, the Socialist Party and the other leftwing parties. A programme for government should be agreed by as many as possible. Personally I don't think that the Labour is capable of or has the intention of bringing in socialist measures to deal with the economic crisis, but they should be given their chance.

Gilmore has said he wants a Labour Government. If he wants one, he would have to start talking to the other Left wing parties and to the Left Independents.

Will not happen. The Labour Party has already made very clear indeed that we have no interest in so-called Left alliances with unreconstructed nationalist parties like Sinn Féin or with the Trot fringe. Thanks, but no thanks.

The "Mullingar Accord" didn't save FG from extinction. People have been writing FG's obituary for 50 years.

but true, when DL merged with labour, a big niche was left open that pbp, sf and others have filled. Not saying it's a good or bad thing, just.. the reality.

Mullingar did not save FG, they just got their act together after a disasterous 00-02...

The mood in Labour seems to be to stop throwing lifebelts to others and focus on pushing to make it a three horse race.
The idea seems to be that the left voters will migrate towards Labour if they thought they had a chance of leading a government, and so might many soft left-leaning FF-ers.
Whatever you think of the analysis, it does preclude cutting deals with anyone at this point.
Interesting to hear Churry Adams on Hooky this afternoon issuing a 'come and get us' plea to Labour after it became evident the PSF vote had fallen again.

I wouldn't call Higgins and most of his comrade so-called leaders in the SP in any way grade A dangerous, but I do believe that most of them (again not including their so-called youth leadership) are dangerous albeit not in a physical way. I was thinking today for a bit that I would on balance rather see Higgins elected than McDonald or Ryan given that they are power wise worse than him if you get me but the thing about Higgins is although that most people know that his economic policies are unrealistic they think that he is a nice, albeit confused, guy. So on reflection I would rather see MLM win.

In relation to the question; the Trots were kicked out of the Labour party because they were dishonest and in effect a party within a party. They won't be welcomed back again. They damaged Labour an awful lot in the 80's, in Ireland and in Britain.
