We are entering into a period of guaranteed class warfare if the elites don't cop themselves on. There is only so much punishment you can mete out to innocents for the crimes of the rich before we get very angry indeed. Any politician choosing to disregard this simple fact is a fool. There is a constructive way to take account of this or there is the confrontational way - the one preferred by those who are too unpleasant and grasping to even think about being fair. A strong group of politicians who are able to keep their eyes fixed firmly on using resources to the optimum benefit of the greatest number of people is what is needed. Neither Fianna Fail nor Fine Gael stand a chance of doing it.

which innocents are you refering to , the term THE VULNERABLE is so over used , its lost all meaning , last autumn it meant anyone who succedded in reaching a particualr age , be them a retired garda inspector , teacher or road sweeper with regard the medical card fiasco , we have an extrodinarily generous wellfare state in this country and an extremley well paid public sector too , who exactly other than mr and mrs middle ireland private sector tax payer is being squeezed

Sarah Carey has abused her position as a journalist with the IT by using her column, on several occasions to promote the interests of the auctioneering profession and seeking to absolve them of an responsilbilityfor the current economic situation, though she did acknowledge her family's auctioneering background and connections in one of the columns.
Her reference to Labour being the political child of RTE ignores the fact of the benign treatment that FF has received at the hands of the broadcaster and the very biasedand favorable treatment that Bertie Ahern has received from RTE.

Aw, they lost their ickle dreams, did they? Does she mean their actual dreams? No REM sleep for you, pesky upper middle classes. Did they default on payments to the sandman or something?

But hang on, aren't dreams and dreamers bad anyway? Isn't that precisely what she's advising the Labour Party to jettison? All their silly dreamy dreamers, who spend their days in a haze dreamily dreaming of a fairer, more equitable society based on a less exploitative distribution of resources. Tsk. They should just swallow a box of Solpadeine and focus on realpolitik, shouldn't they Sarah?

Of course, the larger point is that the dreams of Labour probably differ from the dreams of Carey's cherished "upper middle class". Presumably, the latter dream only of the occasional sojorn on the Med and that a life of privilege won't have an undue effect on their little Oisin or Caoimhe. After all, if they're going to grow up to be doctors and lawyers, they'll have to be able to mix with the common folk, the demographic formerly known as the "workers", now known to Sarah Carey and her ever more rampant ilk of braindead sweet-talking me-feiners as the other people.

Having read the piece, I think it's symptomatic of the general woolly headed thinking that afflicts Ireland today something which is a large part of the reason for our current horrible circumstances.

She's basically posing at being somehow different, and, maybe even radical, but when you actually get down to what she's saying it's the same thing that's been said a thousand times before and just serves to reinforce the rotten status quo.

Basically she is saying that anyone who thinks we could have a proper egalitarian society - as opposed to top down society we have now - is a dreamer. Which frankly says more about her than it does about the Labour party.

Back on topic.. I thought it was an excellent article. Fairly on the button as i see it. Left right politics, for all the hype here, hasn't taken off and shows no sign of it. In 20 years time people will still be having this debate, just as they were in the 80's and Spring tide era.

The key line wasn't that there's no working class, its that the glut is at the centre, in the middle classes, with an underlcass and super rich at the extremes. My parents raised me in ballyfermot, then kimmage. I;ve a home in bluebell. Me and them would have been defined as working class, now we are defined as middle class. So, in my experience, she's right. Doesn't mean her 'model' suits all, but i think its a good comentary.

Labour came very close to overtaking Sarah's FG once, so by that argument, large farmer blueshirtism hasn't taken off either.
