De Rossa slams Government over EU opt-out on human trafficking

Proinsias De Rossa MEP has slammed the Government's decision to 'opt out' of a new EU law, due to be adopted by MEPs this week, which would make it a criminal offence for employers to provide a ready market for victims of human trafficking.

    He/She/It is a bot.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

I wonder is the ground that this legislation covered not already dealt with in forthcoming national-legislation i.e. the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill, which provides for the Gardai to give an illegal immigranta temporary residence-permit if they assist the Gardai with prosecution of a trafficker? I strongly support a crackdown on employers of illegal-immigrants, and I agree that FF's real objection to this law may be Galway tent-syndrome. They clearly have zero intention of cracking down on those employers, some of whom may be filling the coffers of that party. But at the same time I would be concerned if the legislation forced us to give temporary-visas. How would the ECJ interpret this legislation, especially in terms of the burden of proof required the granting of a temporary-permit?

Do you have a link to the law being adopted? Are you sure it doesn't seek to criminalise the victims of human trafficking more than the employers who exploit them?
I'm not saying that the Irish governments reasons for opting out are in any way honourable. I would just like to see if Proinsias is making another knee-jerk pro-EU statement for the sake of it or if it is a genuinely good law.
