Dick Spring and Kerry members no vote in Euro's: SBP

Dick Spring and some 200 other Labour Party members in North and South Kerry have been denied a vote in next Saturday's Euro South convention in Cork as both constituncies members failed to pay the €20 membership fees by the July 1st deadline. Dick's nephew Arthur is one of the two candidates for the nomination. The vast majority of members in Alan Kelly's Tipp North constitunecy paid their membership fees in time. The decision is being appealed.

And why didn't they just pay the €20 on time?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Why didn't Dick & Co simply pay their subs on time? Maybe it's because he's Dick Spring and him and his chums don't think the rules apply to them.

If true, it seems like an open and shut case - Dick Spring & Co missed the deadline = no vote. Tough (unless the boys in the backroom at Labour HQ want to Dickymander the result).

If they haven't paid their dues, then technically, the are not members.

Appeals are made on a case by case basis, and I believe a commonsense approach is taken by the appeals commission. Most of those who didn't pay their membership will be given a vote, including, i would imagine, the former leader.

What's commonsense about being in breach of rules and still allowed to vote even if not technically members?

If they are allowed a vote, what's the point of the bloody rule in the first place?

And would this latitude be allowed to every member of the party - or blocs of party members - if they weren't pals or acolytes of the Dick Spring dynasty?

Yes, they would. I'm in the same position in that I moved house and so didn't get the letter reminding me of the due date and so won't have voting rights at Saturday's convention. I was advised by Labour head office to send in the €20 with a letter to the appeals committee. So in short, yes, ordinary, non-former-leaders would be entitled to appeal not having a vote. Whether they are successful would, I'd imagine, be dependant on the reason they were late etc.

Fair enough if you're talking about one or two people who have moved but 200?
