    Who Next For Galway-West

With the more than likely retirement of MD Higgins can Labour hold on to a seat in Galway-West. If so who in the current Labour ranks would be capable of holding a seat won by and large on a major personal vote. Could current city mayor, Tom Costello retain the seat or is there a better, unknown, candidate in waiting.

With an iron fist if necessary.

Labour have a very difficult job in retaining Mick D's seat. If there is any chance it wont be with the current or existing Galway-West hacks. Costello is a nice guy but does'nt cut the mustard. I think a celebrity candidate from outside the ranks would have a better chance........

Colm Keavney can feel his ears burning.

This is Niall O'Brolochains last big chance.

This is a very hard one to call. If Labour select the right candidate and harvest more 1st preference votes that the Greens, S.F and the second F.G candidate then they hold a better than outside chance of retaining the seat.

O Broclain not a member of Labour and Keavney is from Tuam.

Indeed. but Keavney has been looking for the shot.
And N'OB doesn't have to be inLabour to take the (outgoing) Labour seat.

Right now Keavney isn't a Labour member either.

Celebrity Candidates are rubbish. They more often than not don't get elected or if they do they don't get reelected. Most if not all T.D.'s were councillors that went on to run for the Dail. The motivation behind running celebrity candidates is shallow short termism. Costello or one of the other councillors (or any new one elected in 2009) would be just as likely to get elected as any celebrity candidate. They got elected to the Council and that usually isn't a walkover for any Labour candidate.

Keavney would make an excellent candidate. Spoke to him at an ABA meeting before last general election and he followed through in helping my family out securing assistance for our sister ( The only one of all the candidates that spoke that night). Is he not in Labour anymore ? ...He still talks and reads in the local media as a Leftie.
