Labour Deputy Leadership Race Goes Online

The Labour Party's Deputy Leadership race today went online, with the two candidates posting YouTube videos urging members to vote for them.

The videos, each about two minutes long, are believed to be the first time an internal party election has moved online in this fashion.

Real-life hustings for the Deputy Leadership continue, and votes are due to be returned by 4th October. The new Leader, Eamon Gilmore, and Deputy Leader will officially take office on 5th October.

    Videos below the fold.

I think all the candidates for Pope should do this as well.

Did the party do these videos for the candidates or did they do them themselves?

Either way, they are absolutely pathetic. Nothing worse than people in their 50's kidding themselves that they 'get' YouTube, Bebo .... and even Politics.ie The people involved - on either side of the camera - should be ashamed of themselves.

This kind of stuff just gets the party a bad name. e-communications is one area where Labour should lead.

Jays, after seeing these videos, is there any way you can rescind a vote that you've cast? Come back, Liz McManus. Your party needs you.

Primaries are not internal elections. Parties over there don't operate on a membership basis like they do here, so you can't compare.

    Anyway, great idea.

Wasn't talking about primaries, kiddo. Not sure that a registered Democrat in Iowa would agree with your second point either.

Plus, there was the precedent of the contest for Treasurer of the Slovenian New People's Party last year ....

Kiddo? Not sure whether to be delighted to be mistaken for a young 'kiddo' or to be infuriated by your patronising attitude.

LOL mmhh a tad overreaction there Sonny, you should be throughly ashamed of yourself! Maybe you should go sit in the corner until you calm down, but thanks for the laugh.
