Is the Labour Party facing mutiny?

Penrose was first then it was Broughan now the Labour Party's newest TD Nulty is making very strong suggestions that he too will soon follow them onto the independent benches. If he does will more Labour TD's follow as Broughan has called for?

Nulty pledged support to Labour veteran Mr Broughan after he refused to back the controversial deposit scheme and warned other backbenchers could follow him out of the parliamentary party. "Tommy Broughan is a long standing Labour member, activist and public representative and his decision to break the party whip should be taken very seriously by the party leadership and Labour ministers in Government," said Mr Nulty.

"Mr Nulty, who has in the past made clear his opposition to the Labour-Fine Gael coalition, called for the Government to revise its economic plans and introduce tax increases for high income earners to protect the poor."

Gilmores response to Broughan's departure appears to acknowledge that Broughan had recieved assurances that the bank guarentee scheme would not be extended to professional investors who take a punt on bank bonds. Broughan made it clear that he could not support such a scheme. Broughan said he could not vote for the extension of the bank guarantee, which Labour opposed in opposition. Gilmore said “It wasn’t unexpected,” and that he was not surprised by Mr Broughan's opposition, but he insisted he was confident no other backbenchers would revolt. This would indicate that some discussions took place between them and at the very least Broughan relayed his voting intentions in advance to Gilmore.

Ruairi Quinn, probably sensing the danger, was very careful to play down Broughan's departure when he said "Tommy is a friend and a colleague and I'm saddened by the decision he took, which was a very conscious decision on his part," said Mr Quinn. "Tommy voted against participation in the Government...so this is in a way, not a surprise but I regret it.”

Broughan claims that more Labour Party TD's are ready to jump ship. On the basis of Nulty's comments it would appear that Broughan claims of same will be proven correct. Only question is how many will jump?

It has been referred to before that the coalition possibly have too many TDs a la Jack Lynch in 1977 and that there are too many backbenchers mooching arounfd being unhappy. The devil makes work for idle hands principle.

Nail on the head there. There's really little or no incentive for many backbenchers not to jump ship at some stage over the next few years and as I've said a million times people with views as contrasting as say the likes of Quinn/Burton and Nulty/Broughan aren't compatible in the same party and that isn't having a dig at any of them or even Labour overall but the party is simply too broad and a correction of this is both inevitable and needed for the party's long-term health.
Now obviously it's good for a party to have some degree of divisions of opinions but Labour's are simply too large and this is even more of an issue given the nature of the situation they're in i.e austerity, very unpalatable cuts,Troika etc..

Sure Nulty wouldn`t have got elected if he stood for Independent Labour.

He would want to be careful.

Nulty is full of hot air. He said on his first day in the Dail that he would vote with the government. He hasn't the balls to jump.

He figures a few years posturing, reconciliation a year out from the election, puts him in with a shout of holding his seat if Burton becomes a hate figure.

    Mutiny? - Doubt it.

    What would be the point?

We all knew things were dire before the election and that they were only going to get worse.

Only total idiots believed anything any of the political spinners 'promised' pre-election.

They're all lying spoofers after all, which anyone over 30 should be well aware of and wise to.

Even if by some miracle, the SF'ers and the ULA had won they would now be accused of lying because reality would have consigned their bullsh!t policies to the dustbin months ago.

So a few Labour back benchers have bottled it... so what?

If they all bottle it, they'll achieve nothing apart from easing their consciences.

Yeah I agree. There are a few of those Labour backbenchers (John Lyons, Kevin Humphreys, Eamonn Maloney & Nulty) will do the same and hope the high profile ministerial figure will get the big backlash. I expect many senior Labour figures to jump ship at the next general election like the FF crown did this year.
