Cultural Boycott of Israel "shows intolerance of ultra-left": Richard Humphreys

Well done to Councillor Richard Humphreys for providing a very refreshing perspective from a member of the Labour Party. I went to see a couple of Israeli films and with the hysterical antics of the small group of protesters outside, you'd think we were going to annex the Sinai Peninsula.

I understand that there is a festival of Irish films in Tel Aviv every year which is welcomed and widely supported. It makes me angry that - as a result of a tiny fanatical minority - this country wasn't able to afford the same courtesy to Israelis. It's a shameful departure from this country's reputation for hospitality.

Trust me. There's sweet FA careerism in being seen to be any way pro-Israel in this country. Most politicos keep their heads down and say nothing or else parrot the clichs of the Israel-haters.

Would this constitute a breach of the cultural boycott and should we now boycott Gazans for breaking the boycott?

I attended some films and events every day over the last four days and the festival was terrific and very well attended. The show last night by Israeli rock musician, Izhar Ashdot, was packed. The few protesters didn't take away from the enjoyment of the festival. They were more to be pitied than laughed at. But they were the strangest bunch of protesters I ever saw. On the first night they stood outside with their little banners and it lashed rain on top of them, but they stayed there all evening. But for the rest of the days they just seemed to arrive just before the start, then go away and come back again for the end. Weird way of protesting. It seemed like they weren't protesting the event, just the people who attended. But congratulations to Mrs Nurit Tinari-Modai who made the event happen. It was terrific

Down with this sort of thing! I think we should threaten them with another flotilla.

    It was truly excellent.

On Friday night, there was one gormless guy who tried to disrupt one film by shouting stuff but ended up stumbling over his sentences. I don't know if he was removed or if he just sat down again (blushing furiously in the dark, no doubt).

There's something about Deane and his self annointed title of " Cultural Boycott Officer " that makes my flesh crawl.
The Irish are not a serious people. Colm McCarthy to Miriam O'Callaghan.

This guy is an embarrasment to himself - he constantly issues statements aginast the left - just illustrates how far to the right Labour have shifted.

No all the so called ultra left are in favour of a boycott - the SP are correctly opposed to a boycott.

Looking forward to councillor (I will never be a TD) Humphreys statements on Labour's budget next week - wonder will he be concerned enough to issue a statement about the people his party will screw!
