Ivana Bacik seeking Dublin South East Labour nomination

At a Dublin South East Labour meeting last night three candidates put themselves forward for candidacy at the next General Election.

Ruairi Quinn confirmed to his constituency members that he would be seeking a nomination to run again. Two others also will be putting themselves forward for selection: Cllr Kevin Humphreys and Senator Ivana Bacik.

Labour plans to run two candidates in Dublin South East (and plan to everywhere else except in exceptional circumstances).

Hardly a surprise that she put herself forward for DSE. Although I think Labour would have their work cut out for 2 seats here. I would make FG marginal favourites to win 2 here. Although I would not rule out DSE returning 2 FG and 2 Labour. Will the Labour executive be selecting one of the candidates? A Quinn/Bacik ticket seems somewhat unbalanced to me, they are fishing out of the same pond whereas Humpreys can add something to the Labour vote with his SEIC base.

DSE is her base. She was blooded in the by-election across the river. No harm in that.

    Three great candidates though.

The most important thing is that Gormley gets walloped out of it for ever.

I agree , I think the local organisation will back Kevin in order to force the executive to select Quinn .

Isn't it time Ruari stepped aside now anyway ? Heck, I recall him coming into our meetings in the Trinity Labour branch in the mid-1970s. If the older generation cling on to their seats then there's little opportunity or incentive for fresh blood.

Re: Ivana Bacik seeking Dublin South East Labour nomination

I think Labour members will select Kevin in order to aim for a second seat. Otherwise people who vote for Quinn may transfer to Bacik, but Labour need new voters, they won't get that (or a second seat) with Quinn and Bacik on the ballot paper.

Also, Humphreys is a local party member and activist, Bacik has been a bit of an electoral traveller first running for Dublin, then Trinity (as an independent) then Dublin Central in the recent by-election.

My money is on a Quinn-Humphreys ticket.

You need to factor in the gender parity requirements for candidate selection in the Labour Party, David. Though not conclusive, this plays very heavilly in the Labour Party and will give Ivana a head-start over Kevin.
