Given the opportunity to cut tax rates, Fianna Fáil and the PDs made the choice to cut the top rate. They have now committed to another cut in the top rate from 41% to 40%. That's the Fianna Fáil/PD way. Its not the Labour way.

He has not ruled out increasing the top rate though has he?? I would not trust this man on his word i thought his performance was "mediocre" i was not at all impressed by him at all.

Given that inflation is just under 5%, a cut of 2% in the lowest rate without increasing the thresholds would be devoid of any benefit.
Is this the way it will be done? Has FG agreed?
We can await the details and costings?

I see the negative comments are already in from the low count contributors. A cut in the basic cut is something that benefits every income taxpayer. Do you have a problem with cutting taxes?

Given the move to the tax credit system, the bottom 40% of Income earners won't be paying any income tax this year, so I don't think cutting the standard rate is even aimed at low paid workers. If he planned a very substantial increase in the standard rate band then I would aplpaud the change. Large increases in the tax credit system for workers could also be a way to help lower paid workers, all this is too complicated for voters to follow though.
Cutting the standard rate by 2% could be easily offset by not expanding the tax bands as quickly, so this statement has all the halmarks of a pre election promise aimed at middle class Ireland. I expect the government parties to try and outbid this promise, and the merry go round continues again. I'm not very impressed, just some more politicians wanting to get into power.
In the absence of a commitment to widen the tax-bands, one has to view this promise with a certain cynicism.
