Lord Mayor to visit scene of brutal assault

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr. Michael Conaghan, and the Labour Party Spokesperson on Justice, Deputy Joe Costello, will this evening (Wednesday) visit the scene at St. Audeons Park, Christchurch, Dublin where a young man was the subject of savage and brutal assault last week, in what is believed to have been a case of ‘gay bashing’.

The Lord Mayor and Deputy Costello will earlier (6.30pm) visit the victim of the assault, who is still in a serious condition, at St. James Hospital, Dublin.

“The Lord Mayor and myself are doing this to demonstrate our abhorrence of this sort of crime and to draw attention to the need for additional Garda personnel on our streets to ensure the safety of all our citizens”, Deputy Costello said today.

The Lord Mayor and Deputy Costello will be at St. Audeon’s Park at 7.00pm this evening.

People are savagely beaten up in Dublin every day. Does the Lord Mayor go to visit all of them?

The Lord mayor is highlighting the major increase in hate crime or "Gay Bashing". It's a problem that recives scant media coverage.

wHILE i'm glad to see him making the gesture, I am disgusted at the idea that someone can be treated diffrently because of their sexuality, a crime is a crime, a beating is a beating.

Are there figures to back up this "major increase"?

Excuse me? are you gonna resort to childishness or discuss the matter?

All crimes should be treated equally if you are beating me I don't deserve special treatment the punishment should be the same as if you beat anyone else.

That may be so, but it doesn't follow that you shouldn't get special treatment or punishment depending on the precise nature of the crime. Some crimes may be easier or more difficult to deter, hence, from a purely pragmatic perspective, concerned only with efficiency, it may make sense to treat very similar crimes quite differently depending on the precise circumstances.

I'm not talking abotu treating a murder the same a say a drink driving case.

I mean all persons who are say beaten up should be treted to equal protection of the law, we should not replace one kind of inequality with another.

I fully agree with you on this one, Badnarik. (Just couldn't help myself highlighting the old mantra of the evil one.) I think it can be quite counterproductive to suggest that someone was attacked purely on the basis of their colour, orientation, etc.

Personally, I think that Labour are cynically manipulating this situation for their own political ends. Has the Red Flag been watered down so much that it's now a mere pink?

Deputy Costello says he was doing it for all the citizens. If they were going to pick a case to highlight the issue of street violence then it would make sense to use the most high-profile or outrageous incident to do this.
