Mc Dowell for the Supreme Court?

Hi all....a suggestion in todays tribune that McDowell might just throw in the towel and take up a position on the Supreme Court.........

Personally, I think this would be a good move for such a talented person.........dealing with gob************************es is not easy and surely he has had enough............

    So what do ye think????

Ha! So, yer admitting then that the self-proclaimed Biggest Brain In Ireland has been an absolute failure in the job he coveted for years - Justice?

What has he achieved? Where is the desperately-needed fundamental reform of the administration of the courts, the regulation of the cosy cartels of the legal profession, the root-and-branch overhaul of the pathetically inadequate Gardaí?

All we've got is a raft of nannyist legislation that is unenforceable anyway.

McDowell is as big a chancer as Bertie. They're both incompetents with no vision or plan who rely on PR gimmickry to con the gullible.

Yes that's the problem, some people just don't appreciate how big Michael's brain really is and he should take it somewhere where it will get proper respect

Micky McD has laid his cards firmly on the table and I don’t wish to call into question his impartiality but after the Frank Connolly case, I can’t imagine many people wanting to stand in front of him in the final court of appeal. Republicans may be put in front of the special criminal court but to appeal the decision made there you need the court of criminal appeal which consists of a Judge from the supreme court and two other Judges from the high court (I think; if not, ignore all). Then again he might end up being the height of professionalism and leave personal opinions aside but if we are to judge him from his performance as minister for justice…….

To get a job on the Supreme Court McDowell would need the backing of the Government (ie. FF). At the moment, there is about as much chance of them putting TKWhiskers on the bench.

FF (and the rest of the country) are only 12 months away from seeing the back of McDowell, so I can't see them giving him such a huge appointment.

Personally, I don't think its a runner - nor should it be. The higher levels of the Judiciary have, to a large degree, escaped the criticisim and cynicism that has engulfed all other aspects of public life in the last 10 years. To add such a divisive figure as McDowell could have the effect of bringing the superior courts into disrepute.

He's undoubtedly a man of huge legal calibre, and would be an excellent member of the judiciary, but I think he would need to sit out a long period in the wilderness first, to sanitise him from the tumult of his political rebirth since 2002.

Well then, I suppose he is a failure. But to quote Enoch Powell (another ), all political careers end in failure.

With that in mind, maybe we should concentrate on the extent of failure. In that regard, McDowell has a lot of catching up to do with others. Take for example Irish republicans. Once upon a time, they thought - and defiantly prophecised - that they'd bomb the Brits out of Ireland. Now they've mostly turned into a more dishonest and arrogant version of the SDLP, giving up their guns while striving to put Paisley into office and gritting their teeth while the British Army still swan around Northern Ireland. Now that's failure.

    You've all missed one thing.

He's not practicing at the Bar at the moment, he's on a sabbatical as Minister for Justice, so he's not qualified for appointment to the Supreme Court under the Courts Act 1961.

And Hardiman and himself on the same bench would be a bad idea...

    McDowell for the Supreme Court?

An egomaniac who can't pass a microphone without pontificating, who refers to those who have the audacity to question him as Nazis, who has no problem leaking classified information when (in his opinion) it's for the common good and who retreats from his self-proclaimed high moral ground within 24 hours when the possible consequences are not in sync with his personal and political ambitions?

A perfect choice for the Supreme Court - in Iran, or Syria or China perhaps, definitely not in Ireland.

Really you are filth! You condemn McDowell for labelling someone a nazi and yet basically do the samething yourself? What is wrong with you?
